For many Black travelers, trip planning isn’t as simple as clicking “book.” Travelers can be met with racism, unconscious bias, and stereotypes upon arrival. When choosing where to stay, it's common to seek out a place that feels safe and welcoming, and also works within your budget.
This need for safe travel spaces is part of the reason Victor Hugo Green created the Green Book in 1936, a guide to businesses that would serve Black travelers. A modern version of the Green Book exists today, thanks to Martinique Lewis, who launched the ABC Travel Greenbook in 2020, connecting Black travelers with destinations globally.
Though not always welcomed into new spaces, Black people have long been part of the hospitality industry. In 1869, James Wormley opened the first integrated hotel in Washington D.C. called the Wormley Hotel. It's also considered to be the first Black-owned luxury hotel in the United States.
While there’s still progress to be made, the growing number of Black-owned accommodations worldwide makes it easier than ever to support and empower Black entrepreneurs. Though choosing a Black-owned hotel may seem like a small decision, it is a meaningful way to make a difference and be mindful of where you spend your money.
From family-owned resorts to tropical hideaways, we’ve compiled an ever-growing list of Black-owned stays around the world. Below, find nearly 70 Black-owned hotels to consider for your next trip.
