On January 23, North Carolina Congressman Addison McDowell, along with a few other House Republicans, introduced a bill that would rename Washington D.C.’s Dulles International Airport after President Trump, which, if signed into law, would be renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport.
The bill was also introduced by four other Republicans, Congressmen Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Brandon Gill (R-TX), Riley Morre (R-WV) and Brian Jack (R-GA).
According to Northern Virginia Magazine, the bill, H.R. 691, was referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Rep. Reschenthaler introduced a similar bill in March 2023, which failed.
Washington Dulles International Airport was named for the late Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and was dedicated by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. As Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Dulles had an important role in forming post-war foreign policy with Russia.
“I am excited to co-sponsor Representative McDowell’s legislation to honor President Trump’s historic victory and mandate from the American people,” said Rep. Brian Jack. “After so many tried to ‘cancel’ President Trump during his post-Presidency, Representative McDowell’s bill will enshrine President Trump’s legacy on one of our capital airports.”
There is expected to be pushback on the legislation. Democratic Rep. Suha Subramanyam, who represents the district that includes Dulles Airport, criticized the measure.
“It’s disappointing, but entirely unsurprising, that House Republicans would rather focus their efforts on renaming airports to honor their dear leader than tackling the real issues facing Americans,” Subramanyam said.
