The British Virgin Islands (BVI) welcomed over one million travelers to the British Overseas Territory in 2024, the first time it’s made that achievement since 2016.
The pandemic wasn’t the only challenge the British Virgin Islands have faced in recent years. The BVIs, which comprise a collection of 50-some islands including Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke, struggled to rebuild and recover tourism following the Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, followed by the pandemic in 2020.
The BVIs’ Central Statistics Office reported 1.092 million total visitors arriving in 2024, a 9.8 percent increase from the year prior.
All visitor categories saw year-over-year growth: 768,293 cruise ship passengers visited one or more of the British Virgin Islands, a 6.8 percent year-over-year increase; overnight visitors grew 16.7 percent from 2023, with 305,876 travelers staying overnight; and day trippers saw the highest growth, with 35.1 percent more day trippers in 2024, for a total of 17,970.
The British Virgin Islands expect 2025 to be a “marquee year,” with new developments and further growth, spurred by developments like daily nonstop flights from Miami to Tortola and the reopening of Peter Island Resort.
“These impressive results highlight the diversity of our tourism offerings and reflect our commitment to creating exceptional experiences for all types of visitors,” said Dr. Natalio Wheatly, Premier of the Virgin Islands. “It is a testament to our enduring appeal, the resilience of our tourism sector, and the hard work of everyone who contributes to making these islands a world-class destination."
"As we look to the future, we are dedicated to building on this momentum and ensuring that our growth benefits both our visitors and the people of the Virgin Islands," Wheatly continued.

Visiting the island of Bermuda just got easier. The flagship airline of the island, BermudAir, recently announced a route expansion, with new service from Richmond, VA (RIC), Providence, RI (PVD), and Montreal, Quebec (YUL) to Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA). The airline will stagger the start dates for each of the new routes, with Providence starting on May 22, the Richmond flight on June 7, and the Montreal flight on June 12. “By adding direct service to these key cities, we’re not only making travel more accessible and convenient, but we’re also positioning BermudAir to serve our customers with even greater convenience, reliability and flexibility,” BermudAir Founder and CEO Adam Scott said in the announcement. For travelers looking to save, the airline is currently running a spring sale, which provides a 15 percent discount on all flights before June 30, 2025.

I’m a co-owner of Luaka Bop, a New York-based record label, and last June was accompanying the Staples Jr. Singers, a gospel group from Aberdeen, Miss., on a European tour. For a British Airways flight from London to Paris, three musicians were required to check their guitars, but only one instrument arrived in Paris with us. We filled out the forms and tried to impress upon the employee the importance of getting the guitars before the group’s show the next night. One of the two lost guitars did make it to Paris the next day, but British Airways couldn’t or wouldn’t deliver it, so our tour manager took a cab to the airport only to find it had closed. When the group returned to Britain by train, it was still down two guitars. We got one back a few shows later, and eventually found the other one at Heathrow Airport lost and found — with its neck snapped off and its case destroyed. We ended up with over $5,000 in expenses, which included renting guitars for a dozen shows and purchasing a guitar and case (both used) for Arceola Brown, the musician whose instrument was destroyed. We submitted most receipts with the original claim to British Airways on July 25, then added a few more on Aug. 7 and Sept. 11, for a total of $3,331. (We didn’t keep receipts for the rest.) But beyond receiving a case number, we never heard back, despite several email follow-ups. Can you help?
