Summer vacations to Europe don’t have to mean sea and sand. Fresh water is equally as appealing, and the continent’s most beautiful lake regions are simply stunning year-round. Lake Como’s crystal clear water, dramatic scenery, picturesque villages, and five-star hotels — not to mention A-list celebrity visitors — have contributed to the region’s reputation for being the most romantic (and luxurious) lake in Europe. And while this is very true, Como is breathtaking, across the continent are other bodies of water that deserve attention. From the shores of Lough Corrib in Ireland, where you can stay in an ancient castle, to the limpid turquoise water of Lake Päijänne in Finland, where you can sleep overnight in a floating hotel made entirely of glass, these are the best lakes in Europe for a luxury vacation.
We hope you love the hotels we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

Lake Attersee, or Attersee for short, is surrounded by mountainous peaks in the Salzkammergut region in the state of Salzburg, Austria. It’s the largest lake in the country and is a popular spot year-round mainly due to its exceptional crystal-clear waters, with visibility reaching up to 10 meters.
But despite its popularity, there are pockets of solitude where you can take in the breathtaking natural beauty without the crowds — it stretches around 12 miles, after all. The region is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to pretty historic towns and villages such as Hallstatt (which has another equally attractive lake, Lake Hallstatt), Bad Ischl, and St. Wolfgang. In particular, the historic town of Attersee am Attersee, located on the western shore, is a great place to wander through the cobbled streets and admire the colorful houses.
One of the best places to stay near here is the four-star Hotel Stadler am Attersee. Situated on the banks of the turquoise-blue water, many of the accommodations have balconies overlooking the lake, and there is a private beach with sun loungers, games, and refreshments. Hotel guests are offered reduced rates for watersports like water-skiing, SUPing, and one free ride on the banana boat and complimentary tubing.

Finland’s second-largest lake, Lake Päijänne, is an idyllic destination for a lakeside vacation. The labyrinthine shoreline stretches for over 650 miles, dotted with thousands of islands and little towns. Renowned for its exceptional water quality, Lake Päijänne is a source of drinking water for millions of Finns. And in many places, you can drink straight from the lake.

In October 2022, I took a two-week backpacking trip through Europe, where I slept in shared train cabins and budget Airbnbs.
As a beer aficionado, I've been to my fair share of brew festivals throughout the US, several of which were "Oktoberfest" themed.
On the western slope of the Wasatch Range, Salt Lake City is well known for its giant lake and for being a winter playground, with an abundance of chairlifts, backcountry ski runs, snowshoeing trails, and more snowy activities within reach less than an hour from downtown. But locals know that Salt Lake City has just as much outdoor adventure to offer during the warmer months. In fact, from the expansive canyons of the neighboring Wasatch Range to the foothills that form the edge of downtown, Salt Lake City is a hotspot for summer wildflowers.
Amsterdam, like many other European cities, is facing an overtourism problem. The numbers don’t lie. In the year 2000, the Dutch capital broke a record when it welcomed over 4 million visitors. In 2019, the city’s enthusiasm for unbridled tourism had curbed: 10.2 million visitors came to Amsterdam, which has a population of about 820,000, that year and spent 21.8 million nights in the city.
A national park service site in northern Michigan is offering a glimpse at the future of public transit. Through early October, you can ride an autonomous electric bus to popular sites at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Adastec, a company specializing in autonomous vehicle technology for commercial purposes, is testing autonomous shuttling for park guests in a first-of-its-kind concept for the National Park Service. Guests can register in advance to take part in an experience that, if successful, could set the bar for mass transit in other crowded park service sites.

Southeastern France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is famous for some big things, from Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps, and the rolling landscapes that unfurl below it to the millennia-spanning architecture that defines the region’s capital city, Lyon, and beyond. Ironically, one of the best ways to experience all that grandeur is to think small — that is, to visit the small towns that reflect the best of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes’ endless outdoor possibilities, robust agriculture and gastronomy, and long history and cultural heritage.
