Campervan. The word evokes thoughts of the legendary VW Bus, or maybe the later EuroVan. These days there are big campervans and small ones, pre-made and DIY specials. No matter what it looks like, the idea is the same: something smaller than an RV, bigger than a car, that you can sleep or maybe even live in. A tent on wheels, if you will, perhaps with some of the comforts of home.
I wanted a campervan. In the last few years I’ve done several big road trips. In 2021 it was a 10,000-mile, coast-to-coast adventure through 30 states. In 2022 it was a little shorter jaunt through 10 states and 8 national parks. I did it all in a Mazda Miata RF, essentially the smallest car you can buy in America.

While I loved it all, there were some rather obvious issues. Surprisingly, the lack of space wasn’t the biggest. I was able to fit a tent, sleeping bag, inflatable mattress, and more. The world is your oyster when you can pack light. The problem was there wasn’t much margin for error. I couldn’t sleep in the car, at least not overnight, and there was no fridge to store food. Also, after 6+ hours of driving, I dreaded having to set up camp and get up early the next day to tear down. Also, 6 hours was about my daily limit. I love the Miata, but it is not the most comfortable vehicle.
So I started thinking about converting a van, and what I wanted out of such a machine. Solar was a must, not least to run some lights and a fridge, but to charge my laptop and other gear if I was spending a few days in the wild. I also didn’t want something huge. After visiting over a dozen National Parks in my Miata, the ability to easily navigate and park anywhere was key. Most of all, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.
Broadly speaking, there are three options suitable for van conversions: minivan, “regular” full-size van, and light commercial large van. Colloquially the latter is also by its most common model, a Sprinter (built by Mercedes). There are pros and cons of each, but all can be driven by a standard driver’s license and can fit in a standard parking space (more or less). There’s a lot of overlap in these categories, not least because modern vehicles are just so much larger than their older siblings. Today’s “mini” vans are larger than the full-size vans of yore. For our purposes, though, we’ll try to fit the various options into these 3 categories.
Minivans: Once the purview of soccer moms and dads everywhere, minivans have largely disappeared from the market. These are typically front wheel drive, based on a car chassis, have sliding doors on one or both sides, and are usually the

If you’re converting a passenger van, you’ve got to make a decision about the seats. The way I did it is a little atypical, but there are some pros and cons to each of the possible options. While it seems like the obvious choice is to take out all the seats, giving you more space, I have found that leaving some of them in place is even better. You might even want to leave them all in, though that’s only useful for some people.

Some of the coolest outdoor spaces in the American West are now open for business as part of a new concept from Open Venues—think Airbnb, but for rare and unique venues. An ochre-hued sandstone cave in Moab might be the ideal setting for your rehearsal dinner or maybe opt for a lavender meadow near the Mogollon Rim in northern Arizona. The platform—which is the first of its kind—connects users with unique historic properties and outdoor landscape settings for hosting everything from a corporate event to a private wedding. The current collection of 25 venues is concentrated in the American West, but plans are in the works to take the offerings nationwide. Below are some of the coolest options in their portfolio:
For a lot of Thanksgiving travelers and hosts, there's a mutual, perhaps unwritten, agreement: The out-of-town guests travel, and the hosts handle the cooking.
When I first started thinking about converting a van, one of the main things I wanted was power. Solar power to be precise, with batteries to store it during the day so I could have lights and more at night. From RVs to sailboats, this has become increasingly common. As such, there are a bunch of companies that offer everything from individual products to full kits with everything you need.
With many new and exciting openings, exhibitions, sustainable tourism initiatives, major anniversaries (including Impressionism and D-Day) and the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games, it is without doubt that 2024 is the year to travel to France!
