Hyatt officials announced that the Andaz Riviera Maya Resort is closing in the Mexican Caribbean. It is one of four hotels that Hyatt will close.
The hotel is scheduled to close on or about March 2, but Hyatt announced plans to add 13 new destinations.
The plan is to rebrand the property into the first-ever Alila resort in the Caribbean. The brand has been part of the Hyatt portfolio since 2018 when it first opened in Asia.
Pete Sears, Hyatt’s regional group president, says the idea is a “new level of luxury, sustainability and impactful wellbeing.” The rebrand will result in a smaller hotel, with a greater percentage (about 40 percent) of the rooms being suites.
Andaz had been open in the Mexican Caribbean since 2016, but travelers should be aware of increased costs, as a similar Alila property in California offers rooms for as much as $3,000 per night.
