Jamaica has hosted just over two million overnight, land-based visitors and one million cruise arrivals between January 1 and September 14, said Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s tourism minister, in a statement.
Jamaica’s three million total visitors this year represents “an increase over last year's figures for the same period,” said Bartlett.
“Despite various challenges relating to U.S. travel advisories, Hurricane Beryl and tightness in relation to airlift, we are marginally ahead of last year’s performance, which demonstrates the sustained recovery and growth of our tourism industry,” he said.
Bartlett earlier reported that Jamaica’s arrivals through May of this year totaled 2.96 million travelers, a 9.4 percent increase over 2023, while cruise ship arrivals increased 11 percent year-over-year to 1.34 million visitors.
At the time, Ministry of Tourism officials projected the island would host five million visitors by 2025. Last year, Jamaica welcomed more than four million visitors, Bartlett said.
Increasing airlift to the country from new and emerging markets remains a key component of the Tourism Ministry’s strategy as it “works to enhance competitiveness and strengthen relationships with international carriers and stakeholders,” he added.
Said Bartlett, “As we look ahead, sustainability and resilience remain at the forefront of Jamaica’s tourism agenda.”

Amsterdam, like many other European cities, is facing an overtourism problem. The numbers don’t lie. In the year 2000, the Dutch capital broke a record when it welcomed over 4 million visitors. In 2019, the city’s enthusiasm for unbridled tourism had curbed: 10.2 million visitors came to Amsterdam, which has a population of about 820,000, that year and spent 21.8 million nights in the city.
Germany’s got a big secret: It’s got islands. And not the rocky, desolate, and uninhabited kind, but islands with miles of sandy beaches, picturesque cliffs, peaceful, protected forests, and seaside luxury hotels. The Germans obviously are in the know, and because of their geographical locations, the Dutch and Danes are, too. But nobody else in in the world seems to remember that Germany has a coastline on both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, let alone that this coastline is peppered with dozens of islands. The biggest of all the German islands is Rügen in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, itself a wildly underrated area. While Rügen takes a little effort to get to, the trip is hardly insurmountable, and travelers who want to see Germany away from the big urban centers, internationally known beer festivals, and packed tourist attractions would be remiss to pass on it.
This week, the Vatican officially approved religious pilgrimages to a southern Bosnian village where children reported seeing visions of the Virgin Mary.
Cruise ship stabilizers are features built into the ship to reduce its side-to-side motion (or roll). Though most cruise ships have a variety of active and passive design elements working to provide a smoother ride for passengers, the retractable wing-type stabilizers on the sides of the ship below the water line are the kind the average passenger commonly thinks about.
