The world's largest hotel company continues to show luxury travel is just as much about experiences as it is about high thread count and service with a smile.
The Luxury Group by Marriott International and Sotheby's this week announced plans to extend their ongoing partnership for high-end auction experiences into next year. The offering is called "Iconic Pieces. Extraordinary Experiences." It was first launched earlier this year, and new experiences will debut in December.
"The expansion of our brand partnership with Sotheby's reflects our common belief that true luxury combines both the tangible and intangible," George Hammer, Marriott's global head of luxury marketing, said in a statement. "We're continuing to explore the interplay of art and travel with experiences that not only celebrate our audience's passions but also inspire a deeper connection and appreciation for the artistry behind them. As this collaboration evolves, we're excited to leverage our international presence and the diverse expertise across our portfolio to surprise our guests with even more dynamic, never-been-seen experiences."
The first two of the upcoming new experiences will take the respective winning bidders to Europe for incredibly rare offerings.
"Geneva Grandmasters: A Watchmaking Odyssey Curated by The Ritz-Carlton" will be auctioned off Dec. 6 within Sotheby's Important Watch sales. It's the first time a Marriott experience will be offered in a live auction. The offering includes a horology (the science of timekeeping) immersion at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix, Geneva, with experts from the watch brand Girard-Perregaux. The experience includes a hands-on workshop with watch artisans, the opportunity to shop limited-edition timepieces and a private culinary experience at the Villa Girard-Perregaux in La Chaux-de-Fonds (the ancestral home of the Girard-Perregaux brand).
Online bidding is currently open through Dec. 10 for the next experience, "A Taste of France: An Epicurean Voyage Curated by The Luxury Collection." The winning bidder of the French taste experience will enjoy a stay at Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Paris; the winner will also receive several culinary journeys like a guided day trip to Champagne and an afternoon tea with the renowned artist and chef Laila Gohar.
"This collaboration represents a unique fusion of Sotheby's expertise in curating exceptional luxury collectibles and the Luxury Group's unparalleled approach to hospitality," Eléonore Dethier, Sotheby's global head of partnerships, said in a statement. "We are delighted to present these experiences during The Luxury Sales in New York, celebrating the pinnacle of hospitality, craftsmanship, and savoir-faire, while creating

I start out by washing my face with my line’s cleansers, the clearing oil and cleansing water. Then I use my plumping lotion; it has these gold specks in it and it really does something nice to your skin. I use Clearstem’s Hydraglow stem cell moisturizer before I put on my foundation, and then at night I’ll put on their Clearity serum with vitamin C and mandelic acid as well as their CellRenew serum. The beauty product most nostalgic to me is red lipstick. It’s something I started to wear once I moved to New York, because my mom didn’t let me wear lipstick as a teenager. I’ve been using Anna Sui Cosmetics the longest; we’re going on 25 years of that. We always do a red lipstick, number 400, that I wear. I also like the Nars lip pencil in Dragon Girl that I put underneath my lipstick. And I always wear my Perfect eyeliner. I use this eyeliner brush that’s Thierry Mugler, and it’s thick — it gives me that wide eyeliner look that I like. I wear my signature winged eyeliner everywhere, even when I go to the gym, even when I go to the drugstore. I love going to Bigelow [in the West Village] because they have a bubble bath that I like, Mistral in Lychee Rose Floral. I realize that bubble baths must not be popular now, because it’s really hard to find. But I like those bubbles. I guess from old movies, you always see the glamour pusses in the bathtub with all the bubbles. Garren New York, he’s cut my hair forever and nobody cuts hair like Garren. I get so many comments like, “You have such a great haircut.” I get my hair cut maybe three times a year, but I trim my own bangs in between with whatever scissors I have on hand. I wash my hair with R+C Television shampoo and conditioner or the Primary shampoo and conditioner and masque from their Bleu collection. I always use a Denman brush. Every time I go to London, I buy some from Boots. I also just bought a Dyson flat iron. I guess I copy my mom because she always wore fragrance, Chanel No. 5, and lipstick. I wear fragrance every day. I’ve been wearing our new Electric Whisper. I love the black currant and lychee, which give a slight fruitiness, but then the pink pepper patchouli and vetiver add a spiciness. And of course the hint of rose. Again to the gym, to the drugstore … it’s just natural for me to wear it all the time like my mom. The other thing I always wear is nail polish. My favorite color is Seafoam Green. I hate chipped nails, so I usually do my own, twice a week.
During a six-month trip around Europe, I embraced the "slow travel" mindset, which encourages travelers to spend quality time in each destination they visit. This was important to me because I really wanted to get to know the places I was staying in.

Ever since she was born at Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo in July 2024, Moo Deng, the pygmy hippopotamus, has captured public imagination, with visitors to her home quadrupling since her birth. She has also raised the profile of her species, the lesser-known—and more endangered—sheep-sized cousin of the common hippo. But Moo Deng was not the first mini hippo to become a major celebrity.

New narrow-body planes designed for long-haul flights are changing how people fly.
The setting for some of my most treasured childhood memories is a one-bedroom condo that stood 75 feet from a white sand beach, overlooking the absurdly blue Caribbean. To my sister and me, it was heaven, with Murphy beds — the coolest gizmos ever — folding down at night and disappearing each day.

I woke up in a panic a few years ago when I realized that at 53, I'd spent most of my adult life living in one place. Sure, I'd traveled over the years, but I hadn't lived outside the DC area since moving back here from Chicago at 26.
