Airlines operating at British airports will have to use 80 percent of their take-off and landing slots in order to keep them, the government said on Tuesday, as it brings the industry back in line with pre-pandemic rules.

The British government was working with airlines on Tuesday to help ensure passengers stranded in airports across Europe can get home after an air traffic control glitch caused widespread disruption to flights that is expected to last for days.

Flights in and out of Britain will be disrupted for days, the U.K. government said on Tuesday, after a technical issue with the country’s air traffic control system left thousands of passengers stranded abroad or facing severe delays.

Ryanair on Tuesday resigned from an industry group set up by the British government to help implement its aviation strategy, dismissing it as a “talking shop” which has delivered no benefits or reforms for passengers.

It's one of the most frustrating things about traveling by plane, but at two U.K. airports it is no longer necessary to follow the rule that all liquids must be in containers less than 100ml—and like an increasing number of airports around the world, all other U.K. airports will follow, with a deadline of June 2024.
