Rewards credit cards are a great way to earn valuable reward currency for expenses you already make on the regular. They also make travel more comfortable thanks to transferable points and miles.

There are many great reasons to stay at independent hotels and vacation rentals. Unfortunately, the ease of earning rewards on these stays is not one of them — or so you might think. Over the years, I've enjoyed a variety of unforgettable stays and picked up several tricks to maximize my savings and rewards on them. Here's what I've learned.

Budget airlines are often quick to pull the plug on routes that aren't drawing enough customers to fill planes and make money — and that's certainly the case with Avelo Airlines' latest network cuts. The Houston-based ultra-low-cost carrier on Thursday confirmed that it is trimming three routes from its schedule next month: two that the airline only just started flying late last fall and another that hasn't even launched yet.
