We all need a little advice sometimes, and winter travel is sure to bring up some questions about what to pack, what not to pack, and what we should consider as we enter the busy holiday travel season.
Samantha Brown, Travel Expert and Two-Time Emmy Award-Winning TV Host of Places to Love, shared her own expertise for traveling this winter, along with some of her favorite destinations to visit during the long season.
With her eighth season of Places to Love premiering this January on PBS, Brown has more than enough insider info to help travelers prepare for their upcoming trips, whether it be on an enchanting European river cruise or a frigid Midwest frolic.

One of the biggest concerns travelers have about winter travel is the weather: more specifically, how it might impact their travel plans, and how to pack. Brown gives advice on both concerns.
“There's no way to know what the weather will be when you book your flight,” said Samantha Brown. “But about a week before you leave, start paying close attention to the weather. If you see inclement weather coming, create a Plan B sheet of two to three alternatives you may have such as a later or earlier flight option. And another really key thing to remember is if you will be driving in a mountainous area, understand from locals what the conditions are and if it might be safer to hold off on leaving that certain day. If you do take the risk, make sure you have some sort of emergency kit, just in case.”
Packing for cold weather can also be challenging, but Samantha always makes sure to pack a few different things, from a merino wool top, leggings and socks to winter boots. She also recommends a hydrating stick you can use for your face, lips and hands to protect against bitter cold weather.
For those heading to Europe specifically, she recommends bringing along a waterproof jacket and boots due to wetter weather—“not just ‘weather resistant,’” said Brown.
Brown is godmother of AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna river ship and hosts around one river cruise each year. She also provided some information on what it’s like to sail in winter in Europe.
“Because of my partnership with AmaWaterways I’ve been able to sail on six cruises, including a Rhine cruise that sailed in December. Europe in the winter is such a delight as it’s calmer and more laid back. It feels like it’s just you and the locals and this allows you to savor your time more and really connect with the destination,” said Samantha.
“A lot of the food that we look forward to while in Europe seems geared more towards colder weather as well,” she continued. “Hungarian Goulash, Vienna’s Tafelspitz, Raclette in Switzerland and then there’s the

The United States Department of Transportation under Secretary Pete Buttigieg issued new protections for travelers with disabilities with a new rule expanding rights for disabled travelers and a guide for airlines and airport workers to ensure safe, dignified travel for those with disabilities.
On December 10, the U.S. Department of State released new travel advisories to two Central American countries that are frequent cruise stops for American travelers during the winter Caribbean cruise season: Honduras and Costa Rica.
With plummeting temperatures and shorter days, winter can sometimes feel a little doom and gloom. But that doesn't mean you can't find beauty in the season — you just have to know where to look.
Twelve inches of fresh powder had just fallen at Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau, Alaska, when I arrived for my first day of skiing last February. Snow packed the slumping branches of towering pines and frosted the beards of draping moss. From the chairlift, skiers below me appeared from the thighs up, their lower halves plowing fresh tracks. Whoops of delight rang out from sources unseen.
Winter in Azerbaijan is the season for adventure. Mountains blanketed in snow, exceptional resorts and charming villages provide the perfect setting to embrace the chill.
About 15 years ago, I moved to Nashville and was excited to learn that it was located just a short drive away from Tennessee's Smoky Mountains.
Escaping the cold weather with a trip to Mexico is still an affordable possibility. As the temperatures and snow begin to fall across most of the cold-weather states in the coming weeks, a vacation to Mexico is a popular getaway for sun-seekers. For the 2024-2025 winter travel season, many airlines have launched additional flight capacity to Mexico in an effort to keep up with the growing demand. This includes additional flight routes to the newly-opened Tulum International Airport, outside of Cancun.
Visiting Alaska in winter seems like a crazy idea. Extreme weather conditions in the northernmost state in the nation last around seven months, between October and April, and are not for the faint-hearted. However, there’s a way to travel around Alaska during that time and enjoy the frozen and snowy landscapes in comfort and without having to wear heavy snow boots and a dozen woollen layers: the train. The Alaska Railroad’s Aurora Winter Train is your ticket to see the magic of Alaska in winter, including the northern lights, without getting frostbites.
While Boston wasn’t the first place my parents arrived to in the United States, I’ve always thought of the city as the start of our lives in this country. It’s where my dad got his degree, where my brother and I were born, and where my mom advanced her English beyond the canned simulacra of ESL textbooks—in Chinatown restaurant booths and in conversations with other grad student couples. Boston still feels like a starting point of sorts for us, and I was excited to visit once again from my current home in New York.
