Southwest Ends Free Checked Bags for All

A friendly getaway just got cheaper.  Frontier Airlines recently announced a new promotion that makes travel with a companion or friends totally free, with its Friends Fly Free fare sale. Passengers can book a regular round-trip ticket, and get a complimentary companion fare that can be used for a friend, spouse, or anyone else.  Before booking, travelers should be aware the promotion is only available to members of Frontier's Discount Den, the airline’s paid subscription program.

Southwest Airlines' Rapid Rewards program is experiencing some turbulence — and other airlines have taken notice. Frontier Airlines recently took aim at Southwest with a limited-time "divorce your old airline" deal, which includes both a free checked bag and an economy bundle add-on (plus a sizable helping of shade).

Next year, Hilton will hit the slopes with the opening of a new Canopy hotel in the popular ski resort area of Deer Valley near Park City, Utah.

Coming on the heels of Southwest Airlines unpopular benefit changes, like ending free checked bags, Frontier Airlines sees an opportunity.

Southwest Airlines is ending its long-standing “two bags fly free” policy, marking the end of an era for the airline beloved by American travelers for its value and flexibility. The announcement follows Southwest’s decision last year to end its open-seating policy, with the first assigned seat tickets going on sale later this year.
