Though I pride myself on being an independent traveler—I was in the United States Peace Corps in Paraguay for two years, have been to six continents, and spent multiple years reviewing hotels across the U.S. and around the world, by myself— India is one country that I’ve never considered visiting as a solo traveler.

Typically, dusk heralds the end of a day but, here, at the water’s edge, it’s time for the main event: a nightly wildlife spectacle known as the Penguin Parade. Most destinations that claim to be off the beaten track are all talk. You turn up to find the secret beach is carpeted in beach towels and that all the undiscovered cafés have actually been discovered by several tour groups. But this list is a little different.
