It’s not every day you wish your flight was longer, but after a far-too-short trip on the $80-million Bombardier Global 7500, I certainly did.
Of course, speed was the name of the game during this trip. On February 28, Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier flew from San Luis Obispo, California to London in 9 hours and 17 minutes, setting the aircraft's 100th speed record—and solidifying its status as the fastest business jet in the ultra-long-range segment. That is, until Bombardier’s newest model, the Global 8000, rolls out later this year. With a range of 8000 nautical miles and top speeds of Mach 0.94, it’s poised to be the world’s fastest and longest-range business jet.
Before boarding our flight, we sat down at Bombardier Speed Record Mission Control at ACI Jet in San Luis Obispo, a do-it-all facility that manages and services aircraft, as well as serves as a fixed-base operator (FBO), or an executive passenger terminal. My first question: Why set 100 speed records? Speed records, Bombardier senior director of communications Mark Masluch explains, aren't only bragging rights, but also demonstrations of real-life performance. "When prospective customers are buying the plane, they're not just buying the specs of the aircraft," he says. "They're already thinking about the day-to-day. How do I use the aircraft? What cities am I going to be flying into? What airports can I get in and out of? What time is it going to take for me to get in and out of certain airports?"
Those customers—if they own the plane outright—are often big corporations or ultra-high-net-worth individuals, though one-off charters are also available through partners like VistaJet and XO. For the Global 7500, the most common routes are long-haul journeys between 10 and 17 hours; it has a range of 7,700 nautical miles, the longest in the business jet industry, allowing it to fly nonstop international routes like New York to Hong Kong and Singapore to San Francisco.
On board the Bombardier Global 7500, there are four "zones,” each separated by a door: a crew area with the cockpit and galley, a conference room, a living room with a sofa, and a bedroom with up to a queen-size bed. Plus there are two lavatories—including one that can be upgraded with a shower. Between these spaces, the jet can seat up to 19 guests, depending on the configuration; ours had sleeping arrangements for up to six. (Customers can, of course, customize the Global 7500 to their needs.)

The moment I stepped onto the plane, our lovely flight attendant Lanis Thate-Hembree greeted each passenger by name and served a welcome cocktail. As I sipped and settled

The sun had begun its leisurely descent over Bodrum Town on a September afternoon when I started going back over my list, making sure I hadn’t missed anything. A stroll along the marina, pausing to take a video of a forest of Turkish flags fluttering in the wind: check. Bites of kabak cicegi dolmasi and enginar kalbi on the terrace of a restaurant overlooking gulets bobbing in the harbor below: delicious. Browsing leather shoes and handwoven towels in the labyrinthine bazaar: my credit card statement would attest to that. Satisfied, I started mapping out the route back to the hotel, working in a stop at a posh Turkish delight shop a friend in New York had recommended. I turned to my mom, ready to lead her out of the bazaar, when I noticed her hesitate.
