Planning a Trip to Turkey for My Mother, Who First Showed Me the World

The sun had begun its leisurely descent over Bodrum Town on a September afternoon when I started going back over my list, making sure I hadn’t missed anything. A stroll along the marina, pausing to take a video of a forest of Turkish flags fluttering in the wind: check. Bites of kabak cicegi dolmasi and enginar kalbi on the terrace of a restaurant overlooking gulets bobbing in the harbor below: delicious. Browsing leather shoes and handwoven towels in the labyrinthine bazaar: my credit card statement would attest to that. Satisfied, I started mapping out the route back to the hotel, working in a stop at a posh Turkish delight shop a friend in New York had recommended. I turned to my mom, ready to lead her out of the bazaar, when I noticed her hesitate.

Stop Counting the Countries You Visit

When asked to weigh in on his travel in's and out's for 2025, associate editor Matt Ortile did not hesitate to declare the practice of “country counting” decidedly passé. If you're unfamiliar, a traveler engages in country counting when they present, usually on their Instagram story or some other form of social media, a list of destinations with adjacent boxes checked for each that individual has visited. If you don't think too hard about it, such posting is perfectly innocuous. But may we suggest that it only seems so because it is shallow and consumptive?

What You Need to Know About the Risk of Blood Clots on Long Flights

When someone is about to board a long flight, a list of things to worry about often runs through their head: Will I actually be able to fall asleep? How bad will my jet lag be? Do I have enough snacks? For some, the concern over blood clots might figure somewhere on that list. After all, flights longer than four hours can increase the likelihood that a clot (a clump of gel-like blood) will form in a deep vein and cause deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. The condition can lead to serious and potentially fatal outcomes if the clot breaks loose and gets lodged in a lung artery, preventing blood flow. When this happens, it’s called a pulmonary embolism.
