Tourism’s Next Battlefront: Water

In addition to its four world-class theme parks, Walt Disney World is home to two water parks of the same caliber. For dwellers of the mountains or high desert, a good pair of hiking boots is essential. As a gear tester and editor at Matador, I’ve worn many pairs from brands both established and new, and given that I hike hundreds of miles per year, have become quite picky about what I want in a pair of boots for the trail. Guyana goes by many names. One of the only countries in the Caribbean Community that’s not located in the Caribbean Sea, Guyana is often referred to as the “Land of Many Waters” owing to the numerous rivers that flow through its perch on South America’s North Atlantic coast. Amsterdam, like many other European cities, is facing an overtourism problem. The numbers don’t lie. In the year 2000, the Dutch capital broke a record when it welcomed over 4 million visitors. In 2019, the city’s enthusiasm for unbridled tourism had curbed: 10.2 million visitors came to Amsterdam, which has a population of about 820,000, that year and spent 21.8 million nights in the city.

On a floating restaurant patio in Steveston Village, an enclave of Richmond, BC, the ocean views are almost as pleasant as the flaky, lightly battered cod on your plate. After a busy day cycling along the seashore and watching the catches come in at Fisherman’s Wharf, your reward is a generous helping of the city’s best fish and chips. Tomorrow, you’ll be heading out on the water to try and hook your own rockfish or spot whales along the coast.
