European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European People's Party Manfred Weber met with the leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, in Berlin for a two day summit on Friday.
The meeting was the first time von der Leyen was seen in public following her recovery from severe pneumonia.
On the agenda is European security, migration policy and competitiveness, along with Europe's evolving relationship with the US ahead of president-elect Donald Trump inauguration on Monday. Reducing bureaucracy is also a top theme for the summit.
Ahead of the meeting Merz, whose party is topping the polls ahead of Germany's federal election in February, heaped praised on Sweden and Italy for curbing illegal migration.
He added that Germany comparatively had made only "little steps" and signalled he would be open to a tougher stance on migration at a Europe-wide level — a key part of his party's manifesto.
Whilst the CDU may wish to focus on strategising for the upcoming months, the issue of the far right may dominate discussions with the German election looming just five weeks away and nearby Austria now testing the waters with a coalition between the conservative and far-right parties.

It’s hard to imagine a more archetypical New England town than Litchfield, CT. Tucked into the northwestern edge of Connecticut, it’s the kind of small town that would inspire a George Durrie landscape or a comfort-television drama, with a village green that’s brimming with cafes and shops and streets lined with stately Colonial homes and institutional landmarks (America’s first law school, for instance). But tucked behind its pastoral charm and old-world graces, too, are signs of a more modern underpinning: dozens of striking mid-century modern buildings, designed by some of the era's most prominent architects, including Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer.

There’s magic in Vienna on New Year’s Eve. It’s not just the twinkling lights, the bustling holiday markets, or the excitement of a new 365 days to look forward to—it’s the music that spills out in the streets on the last day of the year. Vienna is known as the capital of classical music, and during New Year’s Eve, the streets are filled with the sounds of Silvesterpfad, one of the largest New Year's Eve celebrations in Europe. People dance in the streets holding glasses of champagne alongside their friends and partners. Just before midnight, soft snowflakes fell and kissed our faces—I didn't want the magic I was feeling to come to an end.
