The weather is getting cooler and that means one thing: it’s time to vote for your favorite hefty floof as part of the annual Fat Bear Week.
The contest, which pits stout fluffs from Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve against one another in a March Madness-style head-to-head bracket, will kick off online voting on Wednesday at 9 a.m. PT, according to explore.org, which hosts the annual tournament. The fattest bear winner will be crowned after the Fat Bear Tuesday championship match on Oct. 10.
“Fat Bear Week highlights the accomplishments of these burly bruins and shines a spotlight on the healthy ecosystem in which they can thrive,” the National Park Service wrote in a statement. “The Brooks River is part of the Bristol Bay watershed, one of the last great salmon runs left on earth. Without the pristine Brooks River ecosystem to support an abundant salmon run, there would be no Fat Bear champions. ”
The tournament was first launched by the National Park Service in 2014 as a one-day competition “with the goal of celebrating the Brooks River brown bears at Katmai and its healthy and remarkable ecosystem,” according to the NPS. But it was so successful, it was expanded to a full week of celebrations the following year.
In 2022, more than 1 million votes were cast for the tournament. The winner — and reigning champion — was 747, a large adult male with reddish-brown fur who shows off his low-hanging fat belly in the late summer and fall. He has won twice: in 2020 and 2022.
Other competitors include 32 Chunk, another large adult male with a distinctive scar across his muzzle. He tends to carry his “substantial fat reserves” on his hind quarters and is so large and confident, “even bear 747 deferred fishing spots and salmon to him.”
Fans can also vote for a couple of spring cubs who were born to a cautious momma bear who kept them away from the “risk of dangerous close encounters with other bears.”
The Fat Bear Week tournament is held as the bears attempt to fatten up in time to hibernate for winter. During hibernation, bears can lose one-third of their body weight since they don’t eat or drink for months.
Bears tend to eat the “richest and most accessible foods they can find” when preparing to hibernate and in Katmai National Park and Preserve, that means salmon.
