It’s never too soon to start making those holiday travel plans or even decide on a winter vacation to escape the cold. If you’ve been saving up points and miles to make the trip easier, now is the time to put them to work for you.
This October, fall promotions, bonus points, and even some upcoming changes to elite status should have you laser-focused on getting the most value from what’s in your wallet (and your loyalty program balance). These are the deals to look for this month as you start booking your next trip.
Discounted awards
Each month, Air France and KLM put many of their redemption flights on sale, but the destinations and number of miles regularly change. This month’s Flying Blue Promo Rewards start as low as 3,750 miles each way for an intra-European award flight and 11,250 miles for a long-haul flight from cities like Chicago and Montreal to Europe. These are for flights between now and the end of March, but you’ll have to act fast and make a reservation in October. If you need Flying Blue miles, the program is a transfer partner with all the major credit card points currencies like American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, and Chase Ultimate Rewards.
Virgin Atlantic has its own discounted awards available through the end of the year, shaving as much as 25 percent off the cost of an award. The savings are only available for flights operated by Virgin Atlantic planes. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points are easy to accrue since the frequent flier program, like Flying Blue, is a partner of major credit card programs.
Lufthansa and its Miles & More program have a similar offer for discounted awards that must be booked by the end of October (eligible for travel through the end of February). These include discounts for as much as half off both intra-European and long-haul awards, but the loyalty program does not partner with any credit card transfer programs, so you’ll have to earn them the hard way.
Use your points and miles to book Air France business class at promotional rates.
Bonus points
For every two nights you stay at an IHG One Rewards hotel between October 12 and the end of the year, you’ll earn 2,000 bonus points. Be sure to register before your first hotel visit. This includes stays at some of its new hotels like Hotel Indigo Galapagos, Regent Hong Kong and the Kimpton Aysla Mallorca in Spain.
Stay with an Accor property between now and December 20 to earn more bonus points. On your first stay of at least two nights, you earn 500 points; your next stay scores 2,500 points. The third stay of at least two nights earns 3,000 more points. You’ll need to register for the promotion and reserve your stay by October 17.

When summertime temperatures start creeping up to triple digits in Denver, I know I'm bound to get a text from a friend.
This as-told-to story is based on a conversation with Hailey Beaupre, 25, a fan of the Starz series "Outlander" who moved from her small town in Connecticut to Glasgow, Scotland, after falling in love with the show and all things Scotland. The following has been edited for length and clarity.
Located roughly halfway between Paris and Amsterdam, the city of Brussels is often overlooked in favor of those two European tourism heavyweights. But Brussels has much to offer in its own right, and is a terrific base from which to explore some of Belgium’s most beautiful cities. During my recent visit to the unofficial capital of Europe, I had the pleasure of staying at the historic and charming Hotel Amigo, a member of the Rocco Forte family of hotels and The Leading Hotels of the World.
For many travelers, airline miles and hotel points are extremely valuable—they are a type of currency that can be used to book flights and overnights around the world.
There will be plenty of spots across the United States to watch the next total solar eclipse in 2024, but one of the best viewing spots may be from the sky.
Trains are my favorite mode of transportation.
The UK’s most famous breakfast is undoubtedly the fry-up, but what it involves depends a lot on where you have it, with the core quartet of eggs, bacon, sausages and black pudding served up alongside numerous regional additions: fried bread or bubble and squeak in England; square sausage, tattie scones and white pudding or haggis in Scotland; cockles and laverbread and a fried slice in Wales; and potato and soda breads in Northern Ireland. But this, of course, isn’t the whole story, and from Turkish eggs to French toast, there’s never been a bigger choice for those heading out for breakfast. Here's our pick of the best ways to start your day.
Peru's Sacred Valley has long lured intrepid travellers with tales of god-like emperors, human sacrifice and gargantuan feats of masonry. The Incas left such an indomitable mark on this part of Peru, it’s hard to believe the Empire lasted for less than a century, from 1438 to 1533. But traces of the ancient civilisation are felt everywhere, from the citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, to the isolated, sky-high fortress of Machu Picchu. Countless visitors traverse the region on hiking tours, but for a journey that truly befits the grandeur and ambition of the Incas, explore the Sacred Valley by train. Here are three of the top sights along the way.
