Famously easy on the eye and infamously tough on the lungs, Cinque Terre is a string of five Italian Riviera villages. Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore – the “Five Lands” – all sit under the Cinque Terre National Park.
The Cinque Terre Express will get you in and your feet will get you around these car-free coastal havens. All fraziones are linked by cliffside walking trails of varying difficulty. Most are free but those from Monterosso to Vernazza and from Vernazza to Corniglia require a Cinque Terre Trekking Card. After a landslide caused the closure of the Path of Love in 2012, this prized oceanfront hiking trail uniting Manarola and Riomaggiore is slated to reopen in 2024 in accordance with new sustainability measures.
In terms of where to stay in Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore – the largest, liveliest, and most southerly village – has a motley of activities for all tastes. Monterosso lures families to the north with its sandy beaches and promise of fewer ups and downs. The postcard-pretty streets and medieval ruins of Vernazza and the grapevine-drenched Manarola cast their spell on couples and honeymooners. Perched on a rocky promontory 377 steps above the main village, Corniglia is the quietest and least-visited.
Apartment rentals and vacation cottages are available in all five fraziones. Offering tantalizing views of the Ligurian Riviera and bucket loads of charm, add these Airbnbs in Cinque Terre to your wishlist today

Picture it: After years of fantasizing and months of planning, you finally arrive at the destination you've always dreamed about. Except, it's just not how you pictured it.
After checking every single cabinet and drawer in the diner-style kitchen (some call it research or curiosity, but I know I’m just nosy), I opened the fridge last. There might as well have been golden light emanating from the door’s middle shelf where a carafe of cold water sat. My shoulders relaxed from relief, and after chugging a full glass, I felt touched—the hosts of this Airbnb in the center of Rome had thought to leave this for me.
The moment I first set foot along the craggy coast of Monterosso al Mare, the westernmost village of the Cinque Terre, I knew I had discovered a unique paradise. It was early October 2007 and far off in the distance, the clifftop villages belonging to this unparalleled Ligurian landscape beckoned with their vivid colors, illuminated by the late summer light. After a few days spent devouring fried anchovies, focaccia, pesto, and breathtaking views, I also quickly understood why Cinque Terre, a UNESCO site since 1997, attracted tourists en masse.
It’s too modern. It’s too fashion-focused. It’s fast-paced, devoid of la dolce vita, it doesn’t feel Italian. Milan has had the same old criticisms levelled at it for decades, and for decades Italy’s business capital has shrugged them off. Because anyone who really knows the city knows it’s not like that at all. The difference between Milan and the rest of the country is that where most Italian cities put their heritage on blousy display, Milan stands back, willing you to discover hers gradually.
Florence, one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations, has banned new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic centre, in the latest move by a local authority to try to free up more homes for locals.
Nice is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the French Riviera. The Côte d’Azur city lies on the Baie des Anges, 20 miles from the Italian border. This means not only can you cross the border for a day trip, but Nice also has a distinct hybrid culture of French and Italian influence. It has a pleasant year-round climate and is the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast. It is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and a charming Old Town with quaint streets lined with colorful buildings, shops, and galleries. The gritty, yet opulent city has attracted many famous artists over the years and is a haven for foodies.
