Whether it's crowd-free sandy bays, dramatic cliffscapes or marine life havens, travelers love a day out at the beach. Each year, travel review and advice site Tripadvisor releases a list of the world’s best beaches as part of its Travellers’ Choice Awards. The site analyses the tens of millions of reviews submitted by global travelers over the past 12 months and looks at the quality and quantity of ratings for beach experiences.
According to Tripadvisor reviewers, Europe’s beaches are the best in the world in 2024, beating the likes of the Caribbean and Hawaii to secure the top three spots. Two UK beaches have also been named the most sustainable in the world in a new subcategory for this year.
This year’s world winner, Praia da Falésia, is up from the number six spot last year. The Algarve beach is known for its dramatic red, sandy cliffs and access by a wooden staircase. Tripadvisor reviewers particularly appreciate its soft, powdery sand and describe it as perfect for sunbathing strolls along the beach. They also recommend visiting in spring for more affordable prices and fewer crowds.
Sicilian beach Spiaggia dei Conigli, a regular in the top spots, comes in second place this year. Located on the island of Lampedusa, it is highly rated for sea turtle sightings and scuba diving. Reviewers say spring generally has the lowest hotel prices, but in the summer Lampedusa becomes more accessible via direct flights from mainland cities, as well as ferry service from Sicily.
La Concha Beach in Spain’s Basque region has climbed an impressive 12 places from last year to be named number three in the world. Reviewers describe it as a great spot for families.
Iceland is holding its own in the top ten this year with two making the list. Reynisfjara Beach comes in fourth place while the dramatic Black Sand Beach, a new entry for 2024, is tenth. Gran Canaria’s Playa de las Canteras is in fifth spot and Playa de Maspalomas is number nine, both also new for this year. Greece also sees three new entries this year, with Myrtos Beach in Kefalonia in eighth place, Anthony Quinn Bay in Faliraki at number 12 and Matala Beach in Crete placed 14th.
With over half (55%) of global Tripadvisor users saying helping the environment is important to them, this year’s Travellers’ Choice best beaches has seen the launch of a new sub-category: World’s Best Sustainable Beaches. The UK comes out top with Sandbanks Beach in Poole, Dorset, named number one and Saundersfoot Beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales, coming in third place.
