How to See the Perseid Meteor Shower This Weekend

Fireworks, but make it totally silent and all-natural. That’s my kind of light show, and the Perseid Meteor Shower—the most popular meteor shower of the year—peaks this weekend, August 11-13. While you can probably see the natural display from your backyard, heading to darker skies pays off. I’ll never forget my first time watching the Perseids during a summer I spent at a dude ranch in a remote Colorado canyon. There were so many meteors, my fellow spectators and I eventually stopped counting, observing the myriad meteors flying through the sky in total awe.

In particular, buzzy devices like the Humane Ai Pin offered travelers an intriguing pitch: What if AI assistants could help you with contextual information while you’re traveling—not just travel planning but actual on-the-ground adventuring?

New York’s Newest Hotels Reveal the City’s Romantic Streak

Hotels are often agents of change in a neighborhood. That’s certainly true in New York, where buttoned-up Wall Street and the frenetic NoMad district, north of Madison Square Park, are just two of the beneficiaries of the city’s latest hotel boom. More than 40 properties have opened across the five boroughs since 2022, during apost-Covid rebirth that’sbrought freshenergy to long-overlooked pockets of Manhattan as well as to its most well-trodden quarters. Among these new arrivals are the Hotel Chelsea, a long-awaited revival of the venerable art-crowd hangout, and Nine Orchard, an elegant makeover of a 1912 bank building on the Lower East Side. Then there’s the Aman, the hushed retreat that opened two summers ago in the middle of Midtown. At least two more luxury hotels are planning to welcome guests next month: the Surrey, an Upper East Side landmark entirely remade by the Malta-based Corinthia Hotels group, and the Manner, an upscale sibling of the Standard hotels, in SoHo. Here, a closer look at five other attention-worthy newcomers:

My First Travels Were Through Stories My Grandmother Told

It was eight in the morning, and the prickly July humidity had already seeped through my skin as I hopped out of the cab in Singapore’s Little India. Greeted by the bustle of vendors setting up, I was transported back to my childhood, to days spent wandering the neighborhood with my grandmother. The aroma of fresh coriander from vibrant spice stalls spurred memories of her tangy coconut prawn curry. The musky fragrance of jasmine adorning colorful flower stalls reminded me of how she’d woven them into my braids. She never would again.
