This fall, airlines continue to invest in the passenger experience. The effort to draw business, in the wake of major loyalty program news from carriers like Delta Air Lines (which sent many of its top-elite SkyMiles members fleeing for alternative airlines), has never been stronger. Wooing customers is also an important consideration as the holidays near, and travelers begin to make busy travel plans. Here are some of the latest updates and changes in the airline industry you should know about to be more informed for your next trip.
A new 18,000 sq ft United Club is now open in Newark International Airport with a premium bar, buffet, Manhattan-inspired design like a custom piece of art by local architect and artist Ron Norsworthy (taking inspiration from Grand Central Station) and plenty of lounging (and working) space. The Newark hub is the first United connecting facility to now sport the all-new design of United Clubs across the airport. One thing you’ll find here, but not at other United Clubs in other cities, is the official New Jersey state sandwich using Taylor ham, egg and cheese.
In Denver, there are new facilities with a 35,000 sq ft location in the B Concourse as well as a 24,000 sq ft location in the A Concourse. Another club location is coming in 2025. The airline says that the majority of its passengers using the airport are connecting between other destinations via Denver, and eventually having more than 100,000 sq ft of lounge space is key for the carrier’s business. The lounges feature artwork from the region as well as menu items, like Colorado Club Sandwiches and an egg frittata inspired by the Denver Omelet.
It’s not just United Club upgrades and improvements happening at the airline. This upgrade includes a host of new amenities by Therabody and Saks Fifth Avenue. Among the changes are updates to the bedding products including the removal of plastic wrapping for environmental reasons plus a redesigned day blanket by Cameroonian designer Claude Kameni.
United is the only U.S. carrier to include eye serum (with niacinamide, caffeine, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5) in its business class amenity kits. Other items include creams meant to soothe, depuff and moisturize the skin. Even in the lounges, the airline will offer Therabody products in its shower suites and “reset lounges” where travelers can rest in sound and vibration chairs in privacy. Also on tap for body recovery are Theragun and RecoveryAir JetBoots. According to the airline, this is the largest update to the carrier’s business class product since 2016.
JetBlue came out strong with a status match offer after yet another major devaluation of Delta SkyMiles for elite status and lounge access. Top-tier Diamond Medallion

A summer getaway to Alaska just got easier. Alaska Airlines is launching the longest flight in their network, a direct from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Anchorage, Alaska. The seasonal flight will be the only direct route from the New York hub to Anchorage, and will begin daily operations on June 13, 2024. Due to the 3,386 mile distance of the route, the flight will be operated on a new Boeing 737-800, which can accommodate the longer flight time, according to a statement from the airline. In addition to the flight to New York, Alaska Airlines also announced the launch of a new nonstop from Anchorage to San Diego starting on May 18, 2024. This service will operate weekly, utilizing a Boeing 737 aircraft. «During our peak summer days, we'll have a robust flight schedule of 63 departures a day from Anchorage,» Alaska Airlines Regional Vice President Marilyn Romano said in the release.
