A professional Airbnb cleaner shares the grossest, most bizarre things she's found while cleaning

There's a reason many Airbnb hosts don't allow pets or parties — and professional cleaner Diana Cruz has seen the explanation firsthand.
Cruz, who's been cleaning Airbnbs full time since quitting her office job five years ago, told Insider that guests typically leave the short-term rentals reasonably clean. But every now and again, Cruz and her husband have to clean up after particularly errant guests, some of whom leave behind bizarre belongings.
In one case, Cruz said she had to clean up after a rogue bachelorette party and found loads of "goodies" — a polite euphemism for penis paraphernalia — strewn about the house.
"There were posters everywhere, and there were little penis cutouts sprinkled all over the floor," Cruz said, adding that new guests were checking in later that day. "Mind you, this was a two-story home, and we had X amount of time to get this ready for the next guest. If the next family has kids and they find something, that's not good."
She and her husband had to triple-check the two-story home before leaving to minimize the risk of the next guest finding something, Cruz said. Plus, the guests had been smoking indoors, so the Cruzes had to use an Ozone machine to remove the smell.
"If you want to party or do a small get-together even though it's not allowed, pick up after yourself — especially if it's those type of things," Cruz said, referring to the anatomical decorations.
Other times, Cruz said she discovered guests have tried to sneak in a pet but failed to clean up after their animals, leaving a mess for her to deal with.
"Guests are supposed to tell us if they bring pets, and sometimes they don't," Cruz said. "And then we'll find a little corner with a pee pad and poop, and we're like, 'what's going on?' As soon as we see that, we contact the owner."
