The city of Cancun said it will begin issuing tourist cards to visitors who rent cars later this month.
Alma Reynoso Zambrano, President of the Quintana Roo Vehicle Rental Association, explained that the city has reestablished this tourist card, allowing drivers a free pass for minor driving infractions.
The cards will be digital in scope and distributed to people renting vehicles in Cancun. A code will be scanned that will identify the name of the car driver.
That doesn’t mean free reign, however. Tourists will be allowed two minor driving violations with only a warning from the Benito Juárez Transit Directorate.
The tourist cards will become effective on December 19. To date, 10,000 cards have been created and are being given to car rental agencies.
In November, local authorities announced the reinstatement of the tourist card for the winter holiday season.
At the time, Zambrano, who chairs the Public Security, Preventive Police and Traffic Commission, said that the cards would not allow tourists to bypass more minor driving infractions, but they are meant to deter transit agent corruption against rental car drivers.
The Tourist Card was initially implemented in 2016 by the state of Quintana Roo but was eventually phased out before this relaunch.
