Over the past decade, I've traveled to nearly every US national park solo, many of them multiple times. At several parks, I started planning a return trip before I even left.

Yosemite National Park Closes Temporarily Due to Severe Winter Storm — What to Know

A major winter storm has closed Yosemite National Park and is bringing other parts of the Sierra Nevada region to a full stop.  Meteorologists are forecasting some areas of the region, including Lake Tahoe, to receive at least 12 feet of snow, or higher, as the system slowly moves through mountainous regions.  Other parts of the region including Mammoth Lakes, the Sierra National Forest, and Yosemite National Park receive severe winter storms and advise the public to stay off the roads. The National Weather Service (NWS) has already placed most of the region on an Avalanche Watch, Avalanche Warning, and Blizzard Warning through at least March 3 at 10:00 am PST.  Yosemite National Park officials have already closed the park, and are asking all visitors currently in the park to «leave no later than noon» today, according to the park's website.  “A significant winter storm will impact much of the West heading into the weekend, including dangerous, blizzard conditions for the Sierra Nevada,” the NWS shared in an advisory.  In response to the upcoming storm, airlines have begun issuing travel waivers to accommodate the rebooking of passengers. United Airlines has issued a travel waiver for several airports in the region including Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) in Aspen, Colorado; Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) near Vail, Colorado; Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) near Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The Best Beaches in Texas

Say the phrase “best beaches in Texas” and you might think the very idea is an impossibility. Not many travelers imagine the Lone Star State as a beach bum’s paradise. Sure, the color of the water tends more toward café au lait than turquoise in places, and it’s legal to drive your vehicle along many of the public beaches. But if you know where to go, you can find inviting expanses of sand, soft ocean breezes, the occasional frolicking dolphin, and—when the weather’s right—waves big enough to surf.

How Does a Day Job Affect an Artist’s Work? This Exhibition Has an Idea

The Hawaii-born artist Toshiko Takaezu was known for her ceramic works that redefined the genre with their “closed forms,” as she called them — sealed vessels whose hidden interior spaces were meant to activate the imagination. Next month, Takaezu’s life and work will be the focus of a major retrospective at the Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, Queens. “Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within” will present over 150 pieces from private and public collections around the country, co-curated by the art historian Glenn Adamson, the museum curator Kate Wiener and the composer and sound artist Leilehua Lanzilotti. (A 368-page monograph, published in collaboration with Yale University Press, will accompany the exhibition.) Visitors will be able to see a collection that spans seven decades of Takaezu’s career, from her early student work in Hawaii in the 1940s to immersive, monumental ceramic forms she produced in the late 1990s to early 2000s. “Takaezu was also a weaver and painter, and often constructed multimedia installations where her ceramics, textiles and paintings operated together,” says Wiener. To play off this idea, the curators organized the show chronologically, incorporating each of these media into various sections, inspired by Takaezu’s own installations. Sound will also play a role. In her ceramic pieces, Takaezu would often place a dried fragment of clay within her closed form vessels, creating a musical rattle. For this exhibit, Lanzilotti (a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in music) has developed a series of videos offering insight into the sonic elements of Takaezu’s work — and visitors can hear those rattles firsthand via an interactive display. .

When Is The 2024 Cherry Blossom Bloom In Washington, D.C.?

The hundreds of pink-and-white cherry blossoms that bloom each year symbolize the start of spring in our nation’s capital. But when peak bloom occurs varies by year, and is dependent on the weather — a few warm days could cause the blooms to come early in March, while a cold snap could keep them from opening up and painting D.C. pink until later in April.
