This will be my 26th Thanksgiving abroad.
My son Jackson joined the family’s overseas adventures on Thanksgiving number two to the day. He was born Thanksgiving Day our second year living in Waterford, Ireland.
That Thanksgiving, we were otherwise occupied. However, every other year that my husband Lief and I have been Americans abroad, we’ve celebrated as traditional a Thanksgiving as possible. The effort has helped to keep us connected to our roots as we’ve moved around the world.
There have been hiccups.
When we arrived in Waterford, it wasn’t possible to buy a frozen turkey. I discovered this the hard way by asking at every market in town. My inquiries met with blank stares. Finally, I sought advice from a local friend.
“I understand that you don’t have Thanksgiving here in Ireland,” I said, “but you do eat turkey, don’t you? Where do you get them?”
“You raise them,” Gerri replied as though speaking to a child.
By the time we left Ireland, seven years later, you could shop for a turkey in the big supermarkets that opened while we were Waterford residents. However, those early years, the birds had to be home-grown.
Our first Thanksgiving in Waterford, therefore, Gerri introduced me to a farmer friend of hers who’d offered to oblige my turkey agenda. We could have paid him to pluck the bird for us, but Gerri suggested I take this chance I might not have again to do the honors myself. She said she’d help. The cold and misty Saturday morning before Thanksgiving Gerri met me in her farmer friend’s drafty barn. My just dead turkey was laid unceremoniously on the plank table before us. I followed Gerri’s lead, grabbing it by the neck then yanking at the feathers, and can tell you that a turkey is not easily parted from its plumage.
From Ireland my family and I moved to Paris where preparing an authentic Thanksgiving dinner was possible thanks to the boutique epicerie in the city’s 4th arrondissement that shared the holiday’s name. Each of our four years in the City of Light, my two children and I set out early the Saturday before turkey day for the hour-long stroll along the Seine from our apartment in the 7th to the place we counted on for Thanksgiving feast essentials.
Going was a joy, chattering with my children as we meandered, pausing to look in the windows of antique shops, art galleries, bookstores, and boutiques. We’d take the Pont Neuf across the Île de la Cité to the other side of the river, stopping to rest on the white stone bench at the center of the bridge to survey the scene before carrying on to our destination on rue Saint Paul.
For the return trip, we moved more purposefully for we were loaded down with sacks of American specialty items we indulged in at this time of year only. In
