Visitors to the largest airport in the United Kingdom should be prepared for packed crowds. London's Heathrow recently broke a 12-month record with over 81 million passengers flying through the airport. Heathrow also had its busiest May ever, with 7.2 million passengers. It's the first time May numbers have ever surpassed seven million. “Supporting 81 [million] journeys doesn’t just help families to make wonderful holiday memories, importantly it is about the vital trade and business links a hub like Heathrow creates for the UK’s economy,” Heathrow’s CEO Thomas Woldbye said in a release. Heading into the summer travel season, London has been top of the charts for international bookings. For example, Chase Travel shared their most booked destinations internationally, and London took the top spot, followed by Paris, Tokyo, Rome, and Cancun. The airport expects to break more records this summer, estimating it will see roughly 30 million pass through.

The “Newton Room Rome” at Rome Fiumicino Airport, dedicated to STEM education, was inaugurated, enhancing scientific learning for middle and high school students.
The “Newton Room Rome” was inaugurated at Rome Fiumicino Airport, an experiential classroom dedicated to STEM disciplines, promoted by Boeing Italia and Aeroporti di Roma in collaboration with the Norwegian non-profit organization FIRST Scandinavia. In this new space, training in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects connected to the world of air transport will be offered to students aged between 13 and 16 from middle and high schools in the area and in the Region.
The inauguration took place in the presence of Hon. Mario Baccini, mayor of the Municipality of Fiumicino, of Vincenzo Nunziata, Chairman of ADR, Marco Troncone, CEO of ADR; of Armida Balla, Communications Manager Italy, Southern Europe and Israel at Boeing and of Per-Arild Konradsen, Founder of FIRST Scandinavia.
The event attended by Giovanna Laschena, International, Security and Research Central Director of ENAC and Patrizia Terlizzi, ENAC Director of Rome Fiumicino Airport, ended with a video message by Hon. Paola Frassinetti, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Education and Merit. The Newton Room represents a cutting-edge educational concept aimed at promoting the study of scientific subjects among girls and boys in primary and secondary schools.
In the Newton Room installed in Terminal 1 Arrivals of the “Leonardo da Vinci” in Fiumicino, starting from next September, high school students in Lazio will have the opportunity to experience an educational module called “Up in the air with numbers”, a lesson that applies mathematical concepts to a flight plan, then tested on a flight simulator by the students themselves.
The Newton Room in Rome in Rome Fiumicino Airport, the first permanent classroom of this kind in Italy, represents a significant step forward in the implementation of the Newton Concept in our country, which has already arrived at the Polytechnic of Bari in 2021 and at the INRIM (National Institute of Metrological Research) of Turin in 2022 with temporary teaching classrooms.

Nature has its way of derailing travel plans. A landslide in August 2023 in the French Alps blocked the main railway just west of the Mont Cenis tunnel. This route is used by all trains from Italy to Lyon and Paris. The sleek French TGVs and the even sleeker Italian Frecciarossa trains competing on the lucrative link from Milan to the French capital were stopped in their tracks. Many passengers bound for Paris and London from Italy rerouted through Switzerland, while others devised creative itineraries via the Riviera, using the historic railway running west from Genoa which, in 1872, became one of the first two routes crossing the frontier from Italy into France. The Mont Cenis route still hasn’t reopened so, needing to travel from Trieste to France, I opt for a dose of Ligurian sunshine and take the train via Genoa, following the coast west from there into France.
