The rebound of global travel in 2024 has been accompanied by the demand for seamless, cashless transactions. Alipay+, Ant International’s cross-border mobile payment and digitalization service, has seen its transaction volumes triple this year.
Talking to Skift, Douglas Feagin, president of Ant International, sheds light on what’s driving this adoption and how it’s shaping the future of travel.
Consumer behavior towards payments have also changed drastically after the pandemic. As use of physical cash went down, mobile wallets and QR code payments became more popular — especially in Asia. Alipay+ launched in 2020 to capitalize on this trend, allowing these travelers to use their local payment apps in foreign countries.
Talking about the evolution, Feagin said, “Before, these apps were only for local use. Today, millions of users can enjoy the same convenience in global destinations, and this is driving the adoption.”
This shift is largely driven by three factors: simplicity, trust, and transparency. “Travelers no longer need to worry about exchanging currency or downloading additional apps. They can rely on the familiar payment systems,” according to Feagin.
As of October 2024, Alipay+ has more than 30 payment partners, including leading e-wallets and bank apps from Asia and beyond, with 1.6 billion consumers, connecting consumers to more than 90 million merchants in 66 markets.
Interestingly, Feagin said that while Asia is the frontrunner in mobile payment adoption, the technology is spreading globally.
Regions like Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe have also been adopting mobile wallets. Examples include Italy’s Tinaba and Europe’s Bluecode, an open QR code payment scheme.
“Through our sponsorship with Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) this summer, we stepped up merchant engagement and campaigns pre and during the championship period, and saw a good increase in transactions and travelers using their Alipay+-supported payment app while in Europe,” he said.
UEFA host cities like Berlin and Munich saw the biggest increase in Alipay+ transactions, according to Alipay+.
Ant International recently announced a three-year strategic partnership with Tottenham Hotspurs, as its official global payment solutions and digital wallet partner. “This is to jointly excite the club’s Asia Pacific fanbase, while connecting more European merchants to Asian travelers,” according to Feagin.
On Friday, Alipay+ announced that Italian fintech app Tinaba has become the first European fintech to integrate Alipay+ Mini Program solution.
McKinsey & Company estimates that Asia’s digital payments will reach 65% of total payments in 2024 (versus an average of 52% globally).

Good morning from Skift. It’s Tuesday, October 22, 2024, and here’s what you need to know about the business of travel today.
A picture is worth a thousand words, but you don’t need to type any of them to search the internet these days. Boosted by artificial intelligence, software on your phone can automatically analyze objects live in your camera view or in a photo (or video) to immediately round up a list of search results. And you don’t even need the latest phone model or third-party apps; current tools for Android and iOS can do the job with a screen tap or swipe. Here’s how.
Indians spent over $2 billion on international travel in August, data from the Indian central bank shows – the highest amount in the past 12 months. Travel held the lion’s share in total overseas spending during the month: close to 63% of $3.2 billion.
In a typical fall, western North Carolina rolls out a red, yellow and purple carpet of leaves, welcoming visitors to experience autumn along the high crest of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. This is not a typical fall.

If you’ve searched for a Eurostar train between the UK and its hubs in mainland Europe, you might have noticed that prices are not cheap..
When most people think of Hyatt Hotels, they think of either luxury hotels (like the Park Hyatt Tokyo in the movie “Lost in Translation”) or urban business hotels (where your corporation’s annual holiday party takes place).
Whether your cinematic tastes tend more toward spine-tingling suspense, bloody gore, cheesy horror, or light-hearted fantasy, watching spooky movies is one of the best ways to get into the Halloween spirit. Since we can’t quite hop aboard flying broomsticks of our own and travel directly into the worlds of such films, visiting halloween movie filming locations in real-life is the next best thing. Although these destinations can be visited any time of the year, planning your “location vacation” during October often comes with special seasonal perks, like film screenings and even whole town transformations into their on-screen counterparts.
What do the New York City subway and the tapas snack box on a United flight have in common? The primary way to pay for both is with a mobile wallet. (Unless, of course, you're a top-tier elite member entitled to free onboard snacks when flying on United).
Dorey Poder and Damir Konjicija didn’t have a vision for their wedding, because they didn’t think they’d be lucky enough to have one: Damir fled war in Bosnia as a child and grew up in a refugee camp in the Czech Republic, and then the southern United States (Kentucky), while Dorey was raised in a very conservative town in California. “We didn’t know if we would ever get married in our lifetime, so when the time actually came, we looked at each other like, do we want to have a wedding? Or is this just an ‘us’ thing?” says Dorey of the brief consideration to get hitched at city hall.
