I felt like a zombie as soon as I touched down in Belgium.
It was the third and final stop on my first trip to Europe, and my body was definitely feeling it. In late September, I left New York City for a 10-day European girls' trip that kicked off in London before landing in Scotland and Belgium. Although I've traveled across different time zones in the US, I never experienced jet lag like in Europe.
During the early leg of my trip, I accidentally dozed off in Uber rides and constantly yawned while sightseeing. By Belgium, I was over it. That's when I remembered a sleep hack I saw on TikTok.
In April 2022, retired Navy SEAL Jocko Willink shared his power nap hack on Mikhaila Peterson's self-titled podcast. He suggested laying on the ground, elevating your feet above your heart using a couch or another surface, and taking an eight-to-ten-minute power nap.
"Set your alarm clock for 10 minutes, and if you're really tired, you'll fall asleep really quickly," Willink said. "And when you wake up, you'll feel like you just slept for six hours."
In an act of desperation, I put the sleep hack to the test in my hotel room in Belgium.
I laid on the ground, elevated my feet on my hotel bed, and promptly passed out. Ten minutes came too soon, but I felt more aware and cognizant than before trying the hack.
I began incorporating my 10-minute naps into my vacation schedule, choosing specific times in the day when I knew I'd need a breather.
It's not a cure-all solution and can't replace regular REM sleep, but I'll use this trick again whenever I'm in a pinch.

I've spent more than 100 hours on trains in the last two years, from 30-hour overnight rides to quick three-hour journeys.
I grew up in the Midwest, but New York City has been my home for the past decade.
While there is a multitude of places to visit in the centre of London, there's another area that should be on every London visitor's list. Not only does Stratford in East London have a wealth of things to see, with many more cultural attractions being developed, but it is also a great value area to stay with modern hotels. It is home to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Westfield Stratford City shopping centre and restaurants serving up food from across the globe, from Thai to Mexican.
After weeks of research, there were some things I didn't expect during my recent trip to Europe.
On Tuesday, October 17 Airline Weekly Analyst Jay Shabat and Skift Editor-in-Chief Sarah Kopit went live on LinkedIn to have a conversation on the current state of the global airline industry.
Japan is a magical place. It's a country where you can roam futuristic neighborhoods one minute and walk down streets that feel like stepping back in time the next.
Nearly a decade ago, I woke up in the middle of the night thinking that I should travel to the Grand Canyon solo — the first National Park on what would become a yearslong personal quest.
Delta Air Lines will announce tweaks to the overhaul of its SkyMiles frequent flyer program "in the coming days," CEO Ed Bastian said on Thursday.
When I fly to Asia from the US, I try to choose flights that get me to my destination in the morning so I can power through the day and get over the jet lag quickly.
While the current prices of airline tickets are down from their peak earlier this year—thanks to pent-up travel demand being released and more flights being added—they likely won’t stay that way for long. The holidays are coming and, with them, an increase in flight prices.
