It’s hard to imagine needing another reason to go to Phuket in February, particularly for those freezing in the Northeast, but there is an additional incentive to check into Amanpuri on the island’s west coast. Former tennis star Maria Sharapova, appointed Aman’s Global Wellness Ambassador last year, is leading a wellness immersion focused on Performance & Recovery. It takes place February 21-24 and is limited to eight participants in all fitness levels. (To inquire: [email protected])
“I have been working closely with the Aman team over the last few months to develop a comprehensive program and I am excited to finally bring it to life for guests at Amanpuri,” she explains. “As an athlete I was obsessive about optimizing my performance and now that I am retired, I’ve realized that elite performance is not just for athletes but for all people who wish to optimize their lives around their career, family, and other pursuits. This bespoke program will combine all the knowledge I gained in my career and provide a holistic itinerary of mindfulness, preparation, nutrition, and recovery focused activities.”
The immersion starts with a consultation with the resort’s medical doctor for a body analysis and includes daily meditations and breathwork practices with Susanna Eduini, a bestelling author and certified energy healer and breathwork practitioner. Warm-up sessions ahead of performance activities will be led by Dr Jason Wersland, founder of Therabody, to ensure guests can learn the long-term benefits of warm up and recovery as vital tools to support overall performance. The performance sessions will be designed and led by Sharapova drawing on her years of mental and physical training that led her to a World Number 1 ranking and five Grand Slam wins. Recovery practices including IV treatment, hydro-facility treatments, and Aman Signature spa treatments such as traditional Thai Nuard Boran Massagewhich combines stretching, movement and direct pressure to aid agility, a body polish with Thai herbs, spices and coconut oil and practices of Chinese Traditional Medicine, all of which would be worth trying on their own even without the need for recovery from these sessions. Sharapova will also lead morning hikes each morning before breakfast and participate in group discussions and dining experiences.
Since food is such an important part of performance, the former champion also participated in designing the meals the group will have along with Aman’s Regional Executive Chef, Asia, Matteo Nardin emphasizing nutritional benefit along with the fresh, lively ingredients in that part of the world. And they won’t be spartan, such as the offerings in the Beach BBQ to kick off the program.

We wanted to pack a lot into our few days in Paris: the Mark Rothko exhibition at La Fondation Louis Vuitton (until April), and, for my techie husband, the new Maison Poincaré maths museum near the Sorbonne (monoglot polymaths can relax: it’s bilingual). We’d been too late to book for Serge Gainsbourg’s house on the Left Bank (already sold out for 2024!) but the new Quai de la Photo floating contemporary photography museum was showing work by the late Jane Birkin’s daughter, Kate Barry. We also wanted to wander round galleries in newly arty Rue Béranger in the Marais and maybe catch Franco-Gabonese artist Myriam Mihindou at Musée du Quai Branly.

Endless miles of vast land stretch as far as the eye can see, but only a few families own much of it. Almost half of all American farmland is owned by people who don't actually farm themselves. Many of these wealthy families make their fortunes in the lumber and forest industry, with millions of acres in timberland throughout the Pacific Northwest.
