As tourists flock to Italy this summer, it may be tough to snag a reservation at one of the 146 hotels recently recognized with “Michelin Keys.”
In April 2024, Michelin introduced the concept of “keys” to recognize outstanding hotels, similar to the star system used for restaurants. Like the one- to three-star restaurant rankings, hotels can earn one, two, or three keys.
Independent experts vetted these hotels, selected from the 5,300 top properties currently in the guides.
Five criteria were used to choose Michelin key hotels, presumably the best of the best:
The Michelin red tour guide was first created in France in the 1920s when fewer than 3000 cars were in France. The venerable tire company launched the guide as an inventive strategy to inspire travelers to take more road trips and increase car and tire sales.
Since then, it has sold more than 30 million guides worldwide. The guides list memorable hotels and restaurants; the stars have become synonymous with fine dining. The collection now includes 28 guides covering 25 countries.
The Michelin Guide announced keys for the most outstanding hotels in Italy this month, following ones previously awarded to properties in France, Spain, and select locations in the U.S.
The list of hotels in Italy includes 8 three-key hotels, 31 two-key hotels, and 107 one-key hotels.
The Michelin Guide website lists all the key hotels with links to their respective reviews in the guide. The eight in Italy that garnered the coveted three keys are listed below:
Just as Michelin restaurants report getting a flurry of reservations after being awarded a star, it’s likely that the “Michelin effect” may begin to impact luxury hotel bookings.

In the ever-expanding wellness world, one of the latest trends is actually one of the oldest: soaking in, and sometimes drinking, therapeutic waters. In ancient Greece, physicians, including Hippocrates, prescribed mineral-rich baths to treat everything from skin diseases to insomnia. (According to one theory, the word “spa” is an acronym of the Latin phrase “sanus per aqua,” meaning “health by water.”) The practice has also been employed in Asia since at least the sixth century A.D., when nomadic Buddhists are said to have brought the concept of onsen (inns and bathhouses built around natural geothermal pools) to Japan from the Korean Peninsula. Now, with various forms of hydrotherapy, such as cold plunges and steam saunas, making a comeback, wellness entrepreneurs are debuting properties centered on bathing. Here, five places to take a dip.
