If you’ve been conjuring up images of whipping down the ski slope (or simply getting cozy during apres-ski in a beautiful setting), you might also be wondering about the best ski destinations to check off your bucket list. New data from the travel insurance experts at Compare the Market AU has recently revealed some of the objectively best ski destinations in the world to help bring your vision to reality.
Compare the Market AU looked at a total of fifty different cities, towns and villages around the world to see which one would be objectively the best option for a perfect ski getaway. The research took into account the number of listed accommodation options, the total length of ski runs by difficulty grade, the annual average snowfall, and the average cost of an adult ski pass.
The best ski destinations in the world, according to this data, suggest that there’s really good skiing all across the planet but the stand-out destinations tend to skew toward France, Austria, and Japan.
The number one ski destination was Hakuba, Japan. The Japanese ski town has the highest number of accommodations listed on TripAdvisor, some of the highest snowfall at 11 meters per year on average, and the second-cheapest average ski passes at USD $33 per adult.
“French ski destinations performed very well in our index, with five out of the top 10 locations being found in the French Alps,” the report reads. “The European Alps in general seem to be a great destination with two Austrian towns and one Swiss ski village (St. Anton am Arlberg, Saalbach and Zermatt respectively) also landing in the top 10.”
The only non-European and non-Japanese destination to make the top 10 was Banff, Canada. The ski town was ranked as the ninth-best ski destination in the world. The Canadian town boasted 82 accommodations on TripAdvisor, 5,000 meters of snowfall per year on average, and a USD $111 ski pass cost per adult.

If you're ever wondering aloud where the hottest mid-winter celebrations take place, those in-the-know might quietly respond, “St. Barts.” The island's luxe air of mystery and remoteness are part of what makes it a seasonal staple for jet setters and superyachts as they follow the sun to the Caribbean in winter. The festivities rage on until the St. Barths Bucket Regatta in mid-March, but what most visitors don’t realize is that the island is practically a year-round one, since the only time hotels typically shut is at the height of hurricane season (late summer).
