(MIAMI, Fl)—Is it a cruise? A rave? A music festival? It’s...all of the above. Renowned DJ and promoter Gary Richards, akaDestructo, is launching a bold start to 2024 with a five-day maritime music festival he’s calling FriendShip 2024. The main anchor? An exclusive island performance in Belize by Skrillex.
Destructo has garnered a reputation for pioneering marine festivals, having first launched Holy Ship in 2012 and the inaugural FriendShip in 2018. FriendShip 2024 marks his biggest venture yet—chartering the massive Norwegian Joy for a roundtrip maritime music festival from Miami to Belize with a lineup that includes Skrillex, Chris Lorenzo, Boys Noize, Flava D, and a roster of international music acts and DJs.
“FriendShip is a culmination of everything I have learned over the years, boiled down into one crazy musical journey over five nights on one of the most amazing cruise ships we could charter,” says Destructo.
When asked how he approached the music festival aspect of the experience, he explains that he “always book the lineups the same way. I book who I would want to see as a fan.” He notes that he’s “extremely proud of the whole lineup” but adds that some standouts this year are Todd Edwards, Patrick Mason, VTSS, Nala, Vigro Deep, Chris Lake, and Skrillex.
Given the potential for festival debacles (see Burning Man 2023), Destructo and his team have doubled down on preparations, as he is quick to say that experience has taught him “the best way to handle challenges is to have proper preparation before the event...by producing less events I’m able to focus year round on FriendShip.”
The FriendShip team has also partnered closely with Norwegian Cruise Lines to offer festival goers a curated assortment of non-music experiences, from comedy shows and yoga, to speed dating and skate demonstrations from pro-skaters Aaron Homoki and David Loy.
The cruise is set to dock at Harvest Caye, Belize, with the promise of a culminating day-to-night island experience, including a Sunrise Sermon dj set from Destructo and headliner performance by Skrillex. Destructo says the team was especially excited about this year’s destination because Harvest Caye has built-in lighting, which allows guests to experience a 24-hour dance party. “This was always my dream” he adds, to see the sun set and rise on an island with all my friends.”
