How I Travel: Baratunde Thurston Has Groceries Waiting for Him at the Hotel

On the PBS show America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston, the second season of which is airing now, each episode showcases a gorgeous spot in the United States, and the ways in which a half dozen or so local residents enjoy the place. In an upcoming Oregon episode, Emmy-nominated host, producer, comedian, and writer Baratunde Thurston checks out a roller derby in Portland, cowboys on a sustainable ranch, forest bathers, an underwater kelp forest, a community garden recultivating native foods, and more. As spectacular as the settings are, it’s the people he’s met and their dedication to the planet that he finds endlessly remarkable.

Iconic San Diego Spot to See Sea Lions Now Closed to Public — Here's Why

A popular beach and location to see sea lions up close along California’s coast will now be closed to the public. San Diego’s famed Point La Jolla and Boomer Beach have been a viewing spot of the natural wildlife along the ocean for decades, and will now be closed to the public as a new measure passed unanimously by the San Diego City Council during a public hearing on Sept. 18, according to meeting minutes reviewed by Travel + Leisure. Point La Jolla is located approximately 15 miles north of downtown San Diego, along the Pacific Ocean. La Jolla's tourism website describes Boomer Beech as a «hidden beach» with «great waves» popular with body surfers.

Easy riding: Sweden’s newest national cycle route is perfect for a towpath adventure

Swifts dart and swoop from Norrqvarn’s eaves, the morning sun filtering through the pines as I load my panniers and get set for a slow day’s cycling. A former mill turned welcoming and, crucially, affordable hotel, Norrqvarn is my starting point for a multi-day bike ride taking in Sweden’s most impressive engineering feat, the Göta canal. The canal celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2022 and the newly opened Göta kanalleden section is the main attraction along Sweden’s national cycle route 7.
