Searching for Southwest flights just got easier.
As of Wednesday, flights for Southwest Airlines are available to view on Google Flights, a move that marks a major change for the airline that, until now, has only been searchable via its main website.
However, the change is only helpful for comparing prices with other airlines. When it comes to actually booking a flight, travelers will be redirected to Southwest's website.
“In our initial piloting of this partnership, we’ve made it possible for Google Flights users to compare our different fare options and click directly into Southwest.comto book their selected itinerary,” Southwest said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure.
The airline — which is the second-largest commercial airline by market value, and the fourth-largest commercial airline by fleet — also did not specify how long the pilot will last or if other changes would be ahead.
The change had been one that was hinted at by Southwest Airlines’ CEO Bob Jordan during the first quarter earnings call in April, first reported by CNBC, (where he also discussed possible changes in the airline's boarding process).
“We’re excited to continue finding ways to expose more consumers to the appeal of our unique combination of value, friendly and flexible policies, and a breadth of flight service that’s built around the more than 800 nonstop routes Southwest will offer this peak summer travel season among 121 airports across 11 countries,” the airline added in its statement.
The change is only happening on Google Flights — meaning no other aggregators or flight sites like Kayak or Skyscanner, will show Southwest flights (at least, for now). The exception being that Southwest flights are now also bookable through Chase Travel, a change that was quietly made last year but got attention this past March.
Southwest Airlines is doubling down on its strategy after Elliott Investment Management, an activist fund, took a $2 billion stake in the company.
Low-cost airline Breeze Airways has slashed prices on many of its popular routes for summer travel starting at just $30.
Elliott Investment Management, an activist fund, has built a nearly $2 billion stake in Southwest Airlines, The Wall Street Journal reported — citing sources.
It's a summer of savings for a popular low-cost airline. Spirit Airlines, based in Fort Lauderdale, recently published dozens of new flight deals, with fares starting at only $20 to popular destinations such as Charlotte, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Portland. Travel + Leisure spotted fares available including:
Frontier Airlines is the cheapest carrier in the United States, despite its history of upselling customers for things like bags and seat selection.
Southwest Airlines is the latest carrier to add special one-off flights for sports fans.
Spirit Airlines is increasing its checked baggage weight limit and making it easier to use travel vouchers in its latest effort to make its policies more flexible.
Southwest Airlines has increased the cost of its early check-in and upgraded boarding services, making it a bit pricier for travelers to guarantee the seat they want.
Justin Parfitt has sent 47 emails, called more than 30 times, and spent an estimated six hours on the phone with Turkish Airlines in an attempt to change his family's flight home from Indonesia to France, he told Business Insider.
United Airlines’ s service will connect New York/Newark Airport (New Jersey) with Tenerife South Airport from 1 June 2024 until at least the end of March 2025.
When traveling between two destinations, flying isn’t always the fastest option. Train stations are often located in city centers, making them easier and quicker to get to/from than an airport. You also don’t have to factor in time spent going through security like you do at an airport.
For the first time ever, Southwest Airlines flight prices now appear on Google Flights. This is a historic move, as the discount airline is famous for only displaying trip costs on its own website and app. The improved pricing transparency makes it substantially easier to compare flight options on a single platform.
