As Lisbon began its St. Anthony's Day celebrations, marking the anniversary of the saint's death, the cruise world celebrated the birth of a new luxury cruise ship, Silversea Cruises' Silver Ray, with a christening ceremony in the heart of the Portuguese city.
The 544-passenger vessel is the 12th ship in the Silversea fleet and the identical twin of Silver Nova, which debuted last year with a novel design that set it apart from other Silversea ships.
Like its sister, Silver Ray is covered with more than 4,000 square meters of glass to bring views of the outside in and a top deck designed to emphasize the sea and sky. Its space-to-guest ratio of 75 gross register tons per passenger and crew-to-guest ratio of 1:1.3 ups the luxuriousness of the ship with spacious suites and public venues, a lack of crowding and attentive service.

Silver Ray also takes on Nova's commitment to incredible culinary experiences on board and ashore with multiple fine-dining restaurants and Silversea's signature S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, conceived by Adam Sachs, former editor in chief of Saveur Magazine. Guests who wish to immerse themselves in the local food-and-wine scene of their cruise destination can participate in hands-on cooking classes at S.A.L.T. Lab, enjoy regionally inspired meals and craft cocktails at S.A.L.T. Kitchen and S.A.L.T. Bar, and venture out on shore excursions that introduce participants not only to local flavors but to the people who produce them.
Silversea has also adopted the mantra of "otium," an ancient Roman concept of leisure time. You'll find this decadent approach to self-indulgence and self-care throughout the ship. The Otium Spa offers not just rejuvenating spa treatments and a complimentary sauna, steam room and spa pool, but a selection of chocolate truffles and spa-inspired cocktails to enjoy after your massage — or whenever you're in need of a pick-me-up. Otium-labeled in-room services include aromatherapy showers and baths, elevated snacks and movie night treats and an in-room dining menu featuring lobster and caviar. And, of course, each suite is serviced by a butler who can deliver the magic.
Whether it's showcasing the world via expansive views from nearly every public area on board or in-depth discovery through shore excursions and culinary experiences, Silver Ray is all about connecting with both land and sea. So it's fitting that the ship was christened by Dr. Maria Josefina Olascoaga, Professor of Ocean Sciences at the University of Miami. She will be co-leading Royal Caribbean Group's Ocean Scope Program, which equips the company's ships with gear and labs that collect data about the ocean's

When it comes to queer history, the city of New York has always been a national beacon. From ballroom culture to iconic nightlife venues to the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic, New York City plays a pivotal role in shaping the global LGBTQ+ narrative. And there are countless institutions and organizations dedicated to not only preserving that history but also uplifting the community today.
Looking for a vacation that lets you ball on a budget? You'll certainly hit your "budget" requirement on Carnival's new Firenze ship — so long as you don't expect to truly ball out.
Luxury cruise line Crystal is about to double the size of its oceangoing fleet by adding two new 690-passenger vessels, the first of which is set to debut in 2028.
Would you travel around the world to sail on Disney Cruise Line's biggest ship yet?
The islands of the Aegean are the jewels of Greece, but that doesn’t mean getting to them is a breeze. Until now, Greek island hopping — glamorous as it is — has required lengthy ferry rides, inconvenient flight schedules, cruises, or, if you're lucky, your own private yacht.
American Cruise Lines’ fall foliage cruises on the Hudson River are so popular they typically sell out a year in advance.
Pack your four-leaf clover, a rabbit's foot and a pair of lucky dice. Luxury cruise line Crystal is bringing casinos back to its ships less than a year after removing them.
I pride myself on being a minimalist packer, even with a toddler in tow. But as our first long-haul flight approached, I found myself going down a Google rabbit hole of tips and gadgets on how to help children sleep on a plane. Despite loving the idea of miniature suitcases that turn into footrests, and inflatable cushions which transform seats into beds, I wanted to avoid extra luggage and anything finicky requiring a pump or too much effort.
I finally realized that my parents are, in fact, always right. Unfortunately, learning my lesson took a stint in a windowless cabin on a Carnival cruise.
Silversea is one of the highest-end cruise lines on the market. So, as you can imagine, its new ship's most expensive suites are luxurious.
The sun was finally peaking through the storm clouds when I cracked open The New Tourist on a train headed out of Amsterdam. I’d absolutely loved the city, even in pouring rain—canals around every corner, beautiful public parks, some of the most charming architecture I’d ever encountered. But I’d also spent the vast majority of my time outside the inner ring, venturing into the historic, heavily touristed city center just once, to hop on a boat tour. I’d wanted to avoid being part of the overcrowding that much of Amsterdam has experienced due to a surge in tourism in recent years. (In 2010, there were 5.3 million overnight hotel stays in the city. Last year, there were 9.4 million. Complaining about tourism is now a frequent refrain among locals and visitors alike.) Put less charitably, I wanted to avoid any possibility of being mistaken for a “tourist” in the most pejorative sense.
