Our slow travel series explores how you can take more mindful journeys by train, boat, bus or bike – with tips on how to reach your no-fly destination, and what to see and do along the way. We asked Austin Bush to take the road less traveled route between Lisbon and Porto. 

Most travelers see little more than the duty-free store during a short connection, but there’s an alternative approach that’s gaining momentum.

Lisbon’s newest tourist attraction, a funicular that carries passengers almost 80 metres up some of the city’s steepest streets, is the latest in a raft of recent developments that have seen Portugal’s capital become one of Europe’s leading city break destinations.

There are European country house hotels, and then there is Casa Palmela, about a 45-minute drive south of Lisbon. Located a couple of miles beyond the sleepy port city of Setubal, it’s surrounded by lush countryside covered in vineyards and dotted with cork trees. A very long and grand walled driveway takes you into a spacious courtyard, letting you know in all its 17th-century splendor that you have arrived.

It was the small and enigmatic Berlengas archipelago that drew us to Peniche harbour. Peniche, 60 miles north of Lisbon, is famous for its surfing beaches, but the islands off its coast often get overlooked. Every morning a couple of hardy passenger boats bounce over eight miles of waves from the peninsula of Peniche to Berlenga Grande. We took our seats on deck between sacks of onions and oranges and, flecked with sea-spray and followed by flocks of screaming gulls, we watched green hills emerge from blue waves ahead. At the port, the goods are unloaded with gulls wheeling and cawing overhead.

Oofos shoes challenge everything I thought I believed about comfort. Like most travelers who love spending hours traipsing around new cities—I have many times chosen to climb the steep, cobblestoned streets of Bairro Alto in Lisbon instead of taking a taxi, and consider walking the entire length of Central Park an ideal afternoon activity—I have to think about what's practical, and not going to hurt my feet 10 minutes into a 4-hour jaunt. But you won't see me Googling “comfortable walking shoes” and clicking the first option that appears. I still want to look good during all this exploring, you see.
