As we approach the Skift Aviation Forum on November 12 in Dallas, Texas, this year’s agenda is brimming with discussions on what’s ahead for airlines as they adapt, leadership strategies and decisions, and what travelers want from this next era in air travel.
Here’s a closer look at a few conversations that I’m excited to hear and you won’t want to miss:
Sara Nelson, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO, is a leading voice in transforming the aviation industry’s approach to labor. Representing over 50,000 flight attendants, Nelson champions better wages, working conditions, and safety for flight crews while highlighting how a well-supported workforce directly enhances the passenger experience. In her upcoming fireside chat, Nelson will dive into the power of unions, the impact of delayed contract negotiations, and how collective bargaining drives change. She’ll also explore the future of aviation labor, focusing on technology, diversity, and the importance of worker rights in shaping a thriving industry.
In this session, industry leaders Matt Klein, EVP & Chief Commercial Officer from Spirit Airlines and Drew Wells, Chief Commercial Officer from Allegiant will tackle the pivotal question of whether the low-cost carrier model is a necessity or an opportunity. As demand for premium travel options among leisure travelers rises, Klein will highlight how Spirit is skillfully adapting its offerings without sacrificing its low-cost appeal. He’ll share insights on recent enhancements that have garnered positive passenger feedback, emphasizing how the airline maintains affordability while introducing premium features. Meanwhile, Wells will discuss Allegiant’s unique approach to the ultra-low-cost carrier model, focusing on its targeted market strategy and risk-taking that have led to sustained profitability and expansion in underserved markets. Together, they will explore how both airlines are balancing operational efficiency with growth, while navigating the challenges of fleet management and the shifting landscape of the airline industry.
Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, will draw from his background as a former pilot and leader at Aer Lingus and address critical industry challenges, including the costs associated with sustainability and ongoing supply chain issues. He will explore how technology is reshaping the traveler experience, discussing topics from digital identities to the New Distribution Capability (NDC) model. Known for his candid opinions, Walsh will also share his thoughts on airport charges, passenger rights, and the steps airlines can take to make travel more accessible and affordable.

An upgraded travel experience just got cheaper. Delta Air Lines recently released hundreds of flight deals in their premium cabins, such as Delta Comfort+ and Delta One for travel throughout the fall and winter. Many of the tickets are priced under $1,000, and travelers can also redeem miles from Delta's SkyMiles program for seats at a discounted rate as well. Some of the lowest-priced flight deals to Europe include New York-JFK to London-Heathrow for only $703 round-trip in Comfort+, or 59,000 Miles, valid on travel from January 7, 2025 through March 6, 2025.
What makes each of us happy is certainly subjective. However, there is one easy way you can increase your chances of feeling that emotion: Choosing to live in a happier state. In September, WalletHub released its study ranking the happiest states in the U.S. It came to its conclusion after evaluating all 50 states across three key dimensions: emotional and physical well-being, work environment, and community and environment. Those three dimensions were evaluated using 30 metrics, including the physical health of the population, sleep rates, food insecurity, commute times, income growth rate, average leisure time per person, safety, and more. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing maximum happiness. It then averaged each state's numbers to calculate its overall score.
Skift Global Forum East returns to Dubai on November 19-20, gathering top leaders from across travel, tourism and hospitality for a day of unparalleled insights, emerging trends, and impactful networking. If you’re part of the global travel industry, this is an event your team can’t afford to miss.
Amtrak currently operates 39 routes, with trains criss-crossing the country to service 500 destinations in 46 states. Starting November 10, 2024, however, the number of Amtrak routes will go down one notch to reach a total of 38. Amtrak is cancelling two routes and launching a brand new one between Chicago and Miami called The Floridian.
Where to eat and drink is a high priority for many travelers. For those who work in the industry, that’s especially the case. I’ve been in the wine business for more than 10 years, first as a wine buyer for a retail store in New York City, and then as a journalist for the past seven years. Finding the best places to get a glass in a new destination is one of the first things I research. This past summer, I headed to Athens for the first time and was intrigued by the city’s wine scene before even hitting the ground.
My dad is from a small town in Massachusetts and has never been much for travel, but his eyes lit up like a child’s when I told him I was headed to Stuttgart, the capital of the German state of Baden-Württemberg in the Swabian region of southwestern Germany. A lifelong car buff, pop knew Stuttgart as the headquarters of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Driving me to the airport, he gushed about the legendary car museums in his coarse Boston accent: “Christalmighty, Johnny Boy, you’ll see the most gawgeous Muhcedes and Pawsches evah made!” I could only imagine otherwise-polite Germans shuddering at his pronunciation of their cherished automobile brands (but I kept that to myself).
Thursday marks a month before the EU's post-Brexit Entry/Exit System (EES) was due to launch.
Pre-pandemic, ultra-low-cost carriers were among the most profitable in the industry. Four years later, a big question in the industry seems to be: Can ultra-low-cost carriers survive?. There’s been rampant speculation that Spirit Airlines may file for bankruptcy. Frontier Airlines has fared better, but it’s also reported underwhelming results.
Women travelers are a dominant force in the travel industry, and their influence is far-reaching: 82% of all travel decisions are made by women, whether it’s choosing the destination, booking accommodations, or deciding on tours and activities.
Paris, Rome and Madrid might be what comes to mind when planning a summer vacation. But what about a trip to the capital of Mongolia?
