The “Great North American Eclipse” is over—now prepare for the “Greatest American Eclipse.”

The business concept of a new travel company called WeatherPromise is simple, if not a little outlandish. Book a trip with them, purchase a WeatherPromise, and you'll get a refund if it rains a certain number of days during your vacation.
It sounds too good to be true, but co-founder Dan Price assured me that it not only works but is a sensible way to plan a trip.
“We customize every WeatherPromise for the specific trip and traveler to design an offer that will fit your destination, type of trip, and dates,” Price explained. “For some trips, we automatically refund the entire trip cost if you see even a single day of bad weather. Other WeatherPromises might trigger after one or two days of bad weather. Almost all WeatherPromises will refund your entire trip cost if the weather is worse than we promise. No matter what, we believe in transparency, so we always show your exact WeatherPromise including triggers and refund amount before you buy.”
Here’s how it works. You book a trip with one of the company’s travel partners, buy a WeatherPromise based on trip destination and duration, and get a refund if the weather exceeds your guarantee. Each WeatherPromise is calculated on various trip parameters, including destination, start and end date, and the cost of the trip. It’s essentially a variation on the concept of travel insurance, but it has nothing to do with delays, missed flights, or lost bags. It’s all about protecting yourself if lousy weather impacts your travel.
The real benefit to WeatherPromise might be that it’s an incentive to travel in the shoulder or off-season to destinations where the weather is most likely to impact a vacation. This is how Price came up with the idea, saying that his best trips have been experienced during shoulder seasons, on vacations to Tasmania and the South Island of New Zealand in the middle of winter, and to Cambodia and India during the rainy season.
Price notes that the company covers trips to routinely considered inclement places, such as London, Ireland, and Scotland.
“WeatherPromises make perfect sense for trips like these,” Price said, “giving travelers the confidence to explore with the confidence that they will get a refund if the weather is bad. We know that what you would consider bad weather in Miami is completely different from what ‘bad weather’ means in Scotland, so our system automatically customizes every WeatherPromise and suggests a WeatherPromise that allows you to maximize your trip,” explained Price. “We always show you exactly what ‘bad weather’ means before you buy a WeatherPromise. Just as importantly, we watch the actual weather as it happens at your destination and then automatically reach out to you with a refund as soon as we see bad

With its daily sunshine, miles of wide golden sand beaches, lush green forests, brightly colored buildings, buses, tuk tuks and smiling people, the island of Sri Lanka richly deserves its title as “Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” And it also seems fitting that Time magazine described the country’s first luxury wellness retreat, Santani, high in the Dumbara mountains above the town of Kandy, as “one of the world’s 100 best places.” Following its launch in 2018, Santani Wellness topped the “best spa” lists of the world’s lifestyle press, including Vogue, Tatler, Conde Nast Traveller and Forbes.
