Any time is a great time to visit Sugar Land, Texas. Sugar Land is 20 miles southwest of Houston, and the area enjoys nearly year-round warm temperatures, which make outdoor activities an option just about any day of the year.
The suburb’s name comes from the product it was once best known for producing: sugar. Early settlers brought sugar cane to the area, and the crop thrived in the fertile floodplain of the Brazos River. Eventually, the sugar plantations were absorbed into Imperial Sugar, which had its refinery and distribution center in Sugar Land for more than 150 years. The old sugar factor still stands tall as a local landmark in this warm, eclectic urban community.
If you can handle the Texas heat in summer, Sugar Land’s town square is alive with activities, offering everything from yoga to outdoor concerts as well as being the unofficial gathering spot for locals. If the Sugar Land Space Cowboys are in town, grab tickets for a home game and cheer on the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

Cullinan Park Conservancy is a 754-acre nature preserve five minutes from downtown Sugar Land. The park is free to access and is an excellent place to take a walk and observe birds and other native wildlife. A four-mile network of soft, easy, shaded trails is attached to the park, but the most extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities are on the boardwalk over the lake. Observe fish, birds, and ducks from the sturdy boardwalk or climb the stairs to the observation tower for more of a birds-eye view.
I didn’t see any alligators on a recent visit, but they’re native to the park, and there are warning signs posted letting guests know to leave them be if they see them. The lake is also full of the most spectacular display of lily pads.

An electronic sign in the square informs locals and visitors about what’s happening. Visit Sugar Land also maintains an events calendar.

“You’re here for the launch?” Ted Ebbers asked me the night of April 19, 2023, when we met on the beach of South Padre Island, Texas. The answer was obvious: We both were killing time before the next day’s scheduled flight of the world’s most powerful rocket. A recently retired Canadian federal employee, Ebbers, 58, drove from his home in Toronto to SpaceX’s spaceport in Boca Chica to watch his first rocket launch. He made the 1,900-mile trip alone, sleeping overnight at rest stops inside his Tesla Model Y.
You’d think marrying a Texan and watching hours of unofficial documentaries about Beyoncé, the queen of Houston, would serve me well for a move to the Lone Star State. Alas, little could prepare me for what was to come.
Every other year since 2014, I go glamorous camping — or glamping — in Marfa, a town in the high desert of West Texas surrounded by mountains.

Now the muscian is partnering with Wild Turkey for their ‘ Trust Your Spirit ’ campaign and their ‘ 101 Bold Nights Musical Mentorship ’ competition where he will help mentor another rising muscial talent. I spoke with Shakey with about why he left acting for music, the best local drink you don’t know about and what it’s like owning a haunted guitar.

When planning a trip to Texan beaches, research is key. The Lone Star State’s coast can be a murky one and folks don’t simply rock up to whatever patch of sand is the closest.

Texas is big – very big. But Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and El Paso are easy-to-reach launchpads for scenic road trips across the state. Just be ready for some lonely roads, particularly in West Texas.
