My passion for tall ship travel is fueled by unique masted vessels that exude serenity, grandeur, intimacy and plenty of maritime personality. There is romantic allure as well, a nod to majestic windjammers of yore. While standing at the bow of a tall ship as it slices through waves, I always feel at one with the sea, inspired by possibilities on horizons ahead. There is an inimitable thrill in watching crew raise and lower sails by hand, as they climb knotted rope ladders and deftly edge themselves across wooden yards (spars on a mast from which sails are set) to unfurl thousands of square feet of canvas that catch wind, billow out and propel the craft forward, sustainably powered by nature. And it is a special joy when that sailing rush is also graced with modern amenities and luxuries—fine cuisine and wine, well-appointed staterooms, exacting service. Intrigued? Exclusive Sea Cloud Cruises, which harkens a renowned yesteryear, is bucket-list vacation bounty—the stuff of which memorable sea-faring dreams are made. Its full 2024 season has recently been announced in a photography-abundant, 95-page brochure, Authentic Sailing Journeys, which spotlights 80 voyages from four to 16 days.
The company plans routes that trumpet major ports, yet also intentionally aims its strategic compass at predominantly far-less-crowded destinations in Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean and Bahamas, Florida, Costa Rica, Central America and South America. Indeed, Sea Cloud Cruises’ ability to slip its three tall ships into hushed harbors near off-the-beaten-splash hideaways is a compelling draw, allowing for extra immersive visits. Aboard its fleet, expect classic crème de la crème elegance and charm with a healthy dose of relaxation. The experience is pampering and posh, yet unpretentious. Easy camaraderie among passengers is par for the course, as is accessibility to the captain, officers and crew. Passengers are welcomed behind-the-scenes to the navigational bridge, where sailor know-how is shared by staff. There is no casino, big stage shows or boisterous pool parties. Instead, savor up-close-and-personal entertainment by global musicians, as well as fascinating talks by accomplished guest lecturers and storytellers. “The original Sea Cloud has such a rich history,” says Sea Cloud President Mirell Reyes. “We continue to identify individuals and institutions who can bring their expertise onboard for our guests' delight.” Noteworthy guest chefs will also add delectable oomph. “We are in discussions with chefs across North America who have strong regional followings, Michelin-stars and James Beard recognition to cook onboard our fleet in 2024 and into 2025,” adds Reyes.

Rather than a city with a single, unified style, London is a collection of distinct neighborhoods, each with their own unique character. One walk around the British capital and you’ll discover the distinction is marked by the architecture of each—from the pastel flat facades of Notting Hill to the stately, stark white townhouses of Kensington to the 19th century, industrial brick buildings of the South Bank.
One silver lining of the COVID pandemic for the travel industry was that it gave many hotels the opportunity to take a break, rethink things, and take on renovation projects that might have otherwise been impossible when open and doing business as usual. As a result, a rash of “better than ever” re-openings have occurred the past two years, and in 2023 I was fortunate enough to visit several top tier Forbes 4 and 5-Star hotels and resorts that had finished or were wrapping up massive upgrades or expansions. I’m not talking about new carpets or un updated spa, I’m talking 8 and 9-figure reimaginings.
