San Francisco is no noob to reinvention. People have said the city is “over” for more than a hundred years. As native San Franciscan Chris Larsen said on local TV news, "We've seen this many times before. You know San Francisco is a story of boom, bust and, kind of, reinvention." Since COVID, the tech elite and their legions of vest and backpack uniformed armies have mostly vanished, leaving downtown and the areas around Market Street in disarray.
That hasn’t stopped locals pledging to make the mid-Market street area a cultural magnet. Fortunately, a design forward luxury hotel has already cemented itself as the go-to destination since it opened in 2017: San Francisco Proper. Back in 2017, Market Street was a buzz. I strolled many a time, pre-COVID, up Market Street’s wide sidewalks, meeting tech founders and VCs in all the glimmering high rises and packed eateries. Though it’s a vastly different picture now in the mid-Market neighborhood, my recent stay at the Proper hinted at the spark possible one day outside the doors of the Proper. And at least for now, there is plenty of spark within its doors.
The first outstanding aspect of the San Francisco Proper Hotel (and all other Proper Hotels, for that matter) is its interior design. Led by interior design icon Kelly Wearstler, each Proper hotel has an ecumenical appeal, a worldly, rich mashup of exquisite pieces that have become Wearstler’s signature. I’ve been a fan of the Santa Monica Proper Hotel since its opening a few years ago, and I didn’t need more than 10 seconds when I was dropped off by my Uber driver to the doors of the San Francisco Proper Hotel to know, for certain, I had arrived in another one of Wearstler’s worlds. It’s a sign of a signature, and Wearstler has been perfecting hers since the late 90s when she opened her humble design studio in Los Angeles.
Following the eclectic interior style of the San Francisco Proper Hotel is its culinary amalgamation under Executive Chef Jason Fox. A heavy hitter like Wearstler but in the culinary world, Fox was beloved in San Francisco for his Michelin Star restaurant, Commonwealth, which he owned and operated for 10 years. After a landlord dispute that forced the closing of Commonwealth, Fox started anew at the Proper property and now experiments richly with the four restaurants within the hotel, his “United Nations of kitchens.” Charmaine’s rooftop, a seductive scene in the city that serves up pastrami steamed buns and huitlacoche stuffed potatoes, is one institution itself. On the random Wednesday evening I popped up, the bar area was zizzing, the delightful sound of clinking glasses filling the space as much as the people. Downstairs, the
