Alaska Airlines is launching a paid subscription service this month offering discounts on Wi-Fi and first dibs on sales.
Entitled Alaska Access, the subscription will cost $5 per month and require a 12 month commitment, according to the airline. Travelers who sign up will receive early access to Alaska’s biggest yearly sales with notifications the night before the sale goes live to the public.
Subscribers will also receive a monthly Wi-Fi voucher allowing them to stream. Each voucher will contain a one-time use code.
«We know time is valuable for our guests who are busy balancing a lot in their lives and we kept that in mind when we developed Alaska Access,» Shane Jones, the vice president of business development at Alaska Airlines, said in a statement. «Alaska Access is part of our commitment to make travel more affordable and convenient for everyone – whether planning for your dream vacation or returning home from college. Our new subscription service allows you to discover some of our best deals of the year right at your fingertips, in just minutes.»
In addition, subscribers will be able to set up a personalized fare page where they can see the lowest fares.
The decision to add a subscription service comes as Alaska is expanding its network this summer with more flights to Las Vegas, California, and beyond, and ahead of plans to launch a new cross-country flight between Portland, Oregon, and Atlanta this fall.
The airline is also in the process of trying to buy fellow West Coast carrier Hawaiian Airlines, which would expand its fleet to 365 narrow and wide-body aircraft. The sale is subject to government approval.
Alaska isn’t alone in offering a paid subscription service. Low-cost carriers like Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines each offer a similar program offering travelers savings on fares as well as on perks like checked bags and seat selection.
