Low-cost Allegiant Airlines plans to close its crew and aircraft base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and reduce its routes by nearly a dozen early next year.
Starting Jan. 7, 2025, the airline will shift its operations over to the airport’s main terminal. The Central Texas airport, which has two terminals, has been undergoing major renovations since 2017. Allegiant Airlines currently flies out of the smaller South Terminal, which is scheduled to close soon as part of the larger construction plans.
“Allegiant will close their base in 2025, but they will continue to operate out of the South Terminal after their base operation ends,” a spokesperson from the airport authority shared in a statement with T+L. “Their transition to the Barbara Jordan Terminal will happen sometime before the South Terminal closure, which is anticipated to occur in 2026.”
Since early 2021, Austin has served as a hub for the low-cost airline, which has operated up to 40 weekly flights at its peak. However, according to new data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, Allegiant will significantly reduce services to the following destinations starting in January 2025:
Once renovations are complete, it’s possible that Allegiant could reestablish its crew base in the future. The new Concourse B at Austin Airport, slated to be finished by 2030, will house 10 more gates and a direct connection to the main Barbara Jordan Terminal.
Austin’s airport is no stranger to changes, as two major carriers exited the market earlier this year. American Airlines ended nearly two dozen routes from the metropolitan area, and Virgin Atlantic suspended flying to London Heathrow Airport less than two years after the inaugural service. In response, Delta Air Lines increased frequencies on several domestic flights, making Austin a “key access point to facilitate connections,” according to the carrier.
A representative from Allegiant did not respond to T+L's request for comment.

The summer of 2024 is in full swing and visitors are flocking to Europe from around the globe.
Passengers traveling from Austin will soon have fewer options for direct flights on a popular carrier. American Airlines recently confirmed to Travel + Leisure it will be discontinuing several routes, including nonstop flights to Las Vegas (LAS), Orlando (MCO), New Orleans (MSY), Reno (RNO) and Palm Springs (PSP). «As part of the continuous evaluation of our network, American will reduce service from Austin (AUS) starting in October,” an American Airlines spokesperson shared with T+L. “We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.” The last scheduled day for the non-stop flights to Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Orlando is Sunday, October 6. The Reno and Palm Springs route previously operated as a seasonal service and will not be returning. American has aggressively modified its route network to increase business objectives, as company leadership previously outlined in an investor briefing. “We are taking this challenge head-on, with clear and decisive actions to deliver on a strategy that maximizes our revenue and profitability, and importantly, one that makes it easy for customers to do business with American,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said in a July 2024 earnings call.
It wasn’t that long ago that U.S. budget airlines were crushing the network carriers. They led in operating profits, with margins of around 13%.
July was arguably the busiest month for aviation news so far this year.

Embedded in a lush slope of jungle, my villa peered over the glimmering bay below, the whole scene animated by butterflies, bird songs, and the treetop rustling of monkeys. As I floated in my private plunge pool, reminding myself to take it all in, I reflexively grabbed my phone to check the weather app. I placed it back down on the towel, scolding myself for the lapse in mindfulness. Within seconds I grabbed my phone to check it again before remembering I just did.
