Sure, the concerts and comedy shows still bring in crowds. But I discovered that you can be within miles of downtown Branson and never enter the popular town. That’s because there is so much territory to cover, and so much to do in Southwest Missouri, that you won’t have time. It’s like being in Disney World, but the fun, the adventure, and the discovery emanate from the flora and fauna rather than roller coasters and concession stands.
Begin your journey by flying into Springfield-Branson National Airport via Allegiant, American, Delta, or United. It’s small and convenient, and you’ll find your rental car parked just steps away. From the airport, start your exploration at one of the more than 6,000 caves in Missouri and arguably the most impressive: Fantastic Caverns.
The Ozarks are rife with limestone and the proper mountainous terrain to form caverns over millions of years. Fantastic Caverns is the only one that takes you deep within its belly via a jeep-drawn tram, a “literally” cool experience at a consistent 60 degrees. The underground spaces are nicely lit to highlight the constant tiny drips forming massive stalactites and stalagmites, and your guide will tell you all about how the caverns were used (and abused) since they were discovered in 1867.
You can’t leave the Springfield area before wandering the mammoth Bass Pro Shop National Headquarters. At 350,000 square feet, it would warrant a stop all on its own, but it also houses one of the most impressive showcases of wildlife in the nation. For starters, the collection of game animals is so extensive you’ll find yourself wandering from one room to the next wondering how it’s possible that you’re still going.
Then you’ll turn a corner into the 1.5-million-gallon aquarium, five times voted the nation’s #1 aquarium by USA Today. Created by Johnny Morris, CEO and Founder of Bass Pro Shops, the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium gives you an up-close-and-personal look at 35,000 fish, mammals, reptiles and birds. You’ll see the tiniest spotted garden eel sticking twig-like out of the sand and swaying with the currents. On the other extreme, you’ll gasp at the Atlantic Goliath Grouper that weighs over 400 pounds and was caught by none other than Morris himself.
Little known fact: Table Rock Lake covers 40,000 acres. The resulting shoreline stretches longer than the state of California. For picnickers, sun worshippers, kayakers, paddleboarders, and birders, the lake provides a calm respite.
But Table Rock Lake is also a haven for fishing. This lake never freezes, so no matter the time of year, anglers can sink a hook into a trophy-sized bass, crappie, or catfish. The Missouri Department of Conservation makes it easy to secure a license,
