It can’t often be said that the best hoteliers are the accidental kind but at Calabash, a petite hideaway on the Caribbean island of Grenada, it’s true. After being tempted to buy a rum distillery in 1985, Leo Garbutt ended up instead buying Calabash, a small boutique hotel, and has run it ever since with his wife, Lilian, with the resort now being under the management of their three daughters.
These days, the distillery in question, the River Antoine Estate Rum Distillery, which is powered by the oldest working water wheel in the Caribbean, is a tourist destination in its own right but Calabash, too, has risen from being a quiet bolthole in the south of the island to one of Grenada’s most elegant places to stay.
At night at Calabash, the tree frogs perform a noisy concerto, the sound of the waves lapping on Prickly Bay a back-drop to their wild songbook. The sun rises early here and, as it does, the hotel takes on a new life, with towering palm trees and frangipani-trimmed lawns leading the way to 30 suites and four villas, the air scented with jasmine and ylang-ylang.
Hugging a horseshoe-shaped bay, Calabash has a laid-back, bare-foot appeal yet nonetheless oozes a modern approach to hospitality. Interiors are clean-cut and contemporary with thoughtful nods to the destination. Most rooms have a cream-on-cream palette, with seascapes on the walls and textiles printed with sea coral in shades of azure, cobalt and seashell pink.
For the wow factor, the newly-designed Penthouse has a slick aesthetic. There’s a grand, open-plan living-dining room and a rooftop terrace with a backlit plunge pool. (For larger groups, the downstairs suite can also be added for private, villa-style accommodation.) The chic bedroom is a soothing retreat, with its dove-grey panelled walls, linen-covered armchairs and a deep bed laid with the softest, high-threadcount linens. In the showstopper of a bathroom, meanwhile, it’s all about glamour with a central oval bath taking centre stage, lit from above by a statement chandelier. Meanwhile, a vast double sink unit, dressing table and an adjoining dressing room give plenty of room to spread out—the room is so big, in fact, that you could dance a night-time ballet across the hand-laid, mosaic tiles if the treefrogs get particularly lyrical.
While the hotel has been run by the same family since the 1980s, the approach here is continuously forward-thinking—marrying a five-star ethos with a philosophy that is rooted in the island. Leo’s daughters—Adèle, Beth and Bobbie—are hands-on and present around the resort, and are passionate about building the Calabash name as one that is synonymous with sustainability and community. Food is at the heart of this, with the hotel being a

Copenhagen is home to some of the world’s most sought after dinner reservations. And while a few have earned three-Michelin stars as well as the title of ‘World’s Best Restaurant’ the most satisfying meal I had in all of 2023 was at Restaurant Jordnær , located a short commuter train ride away from the main city in Gentofte. Chef Eric Vildgaard and his wife and partner Tina Kragh Vildgaard have crafted a tasting menu and dining experience that maintain excitement and satisfaction throughout its many courses — and earned the restaurant two Michelin stars as well as 2023 “Restaurant of the Year” in Denmark by the Danish Dining Guide. I spoke with Chef Vildgaard, along with Tina Kragh Vildgaard, about their shared passion for Jordnær and their vision to provide every guest with a memorable evening.
Where do you find spectacular and life-changing destinations that are without the hordes that have become commonplace in so many destinations worldwide, particularly in Europe? Last week in Forbes, I asked some travel experts about where people are going. This week, I asked the same gurus about their choices for where to go next. I was looking for off-the-radar destinations they love, places to go before they get discovered.
Surely at some point in your childhood, you sat in front of a globe and spun it around and around until your index finger landed on a random spot. As adults, we rely on content, recommendations, or our own instincts when it comes to visiting a specific destination. To make it a bit easier: Tell us your favorite color and we'll tell you where to travel.
Finding the best walking shoes for travel can be tough. You want something comfortable enough to get you through a full day of wandering around, but not so comfortable that it screams “I'm a tourist!” And since nobody wants to tote around a bag (checked or otherwise) filled with shoes, the ones that do make the packing list cut need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.
Perched above the Ionian Sea on a rocky promontory, the iconic San Domenico Palace welcomes guests to a world of unparalleled luxury that’s not only reminiscent of the TV show “White Lotus” — it actually served as the filming location for Season 2. This beautiful hotel in the heart of Taormina, Sicily, is a 14th-century convent reimagined, seamlessly blending historic charm with modern opulence. A testament to Sicilian elegance, the hotel’s lush gardens and stunning sea-view deluxe rooms give guests intimate spaces to unwind in a place that feels more like a sanctuary than a hotel.
Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is presided over by the Alhambra and those snow-capped ranges. Despite the stronghold summoning travelers by the droves, the Andalusian city slips under the radar and offers a rich cultural experience minus the crowds of Spain’s largest cities.
For many travelers, a Florida vacation means one of two things: white-sand beaches or Mickey Mouse. But if you drive north of many of Florida’s most famous coastal resorts, and continue on past Disney World, you’ll find Ocala, where streets are lined with majestic oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and rolling farmlands are edged with gleaming white ranch rail fencing. Everywhere you look, there are reminders of the area’s biggest business: horses.
South Florida’s Gold Coast is renowned for its blue skies, pristine beaches, and ritzy lifestyle. Anchored by Miami to the south and Palm Beach to the north, this stretch of Atlantic coastline has long been a playground for the rich and famous. Smack dab in the middle of the Gold Coast is Fort Lauderdale. The tropical metropolis is sometimes overlooked for its glitzier neighbors when it comes to vacation locales — the city was once best known as the capital of spring break pilgrimages and, in more recent years, as a popular cruise ship port — but thanks to recent development, a thriving arts and culture community, an evolving culinary scene, and its laid-back vibe, Fort Lauderdale is now one of the state’s must-visit destinations.
