Me, I know it’s truly time to bid summer adieu when Diageo’s Special Releases are revealed.
Every year since 2001 Diageo, one of the largest multinational spirits companies, unveils a much-anticipated collection of exceptional limited-release expressions—some of which hail from little-known distilleries. Hence the name, “special releases.” And while the initiative has evolved over the years (reducing bottling numbers from ten to eight beginning in 2019; completely doing away with the Brora and Port Ellen expressions from 2018 onward) the offerings remain outstanding.
“For me, Spirited Xchange is about identifying and celebrating the ideas, flavors, and tastes that surround us each day and inspire our curiosity to create,” said master blender Dr. Stuart Morrison, who personally picked each of the whiskies for this year’s Special Releases. “This collection has given us the opportunity to roam freely through our vast portfolio and experiment with old and new cask types, including various wine and local spirits casks to create eight one-of-a-kind expressions that we’ve never imagined before.”
As every dedicated follower of Scotch malt whisky knows, there are always highlights within the collection—in addition to the tried-and-true staples we always watch out for. And given that this year’s expressions primarily focus on interesting (if not unconventional) cask finishes, the notable pillars include a robustly saline Lagavulin 12 finished in Don Julio añejo tequila casks; an umami-forward no-age-statement Mortlach with a pinot noir and Kanosuke Japanese whisky finish; a Talisker that used ruby, white, and tawny Port; plus a 14-Year Singleton that’s spent time in white Burgundy casks.
Another noteworthy release is Roseisle 12, which marks the debut single malt from the massive 13-year-old distillery in the Strathspey region of Scotland. But it’s not the first time Roseisle has made an appearance in the Special Releases collection: We’ve seen it in 2017’s Collectivum XXVIII, which is a blend from all 28 operational single malt distilleries own by Diageo.
Apart from the liquid, Diageo tapped eight artists from around the world to bring the concept of Spirited Xchange to life by way of packaging design. Lagavulin, for instance, honors the rich history of Mesoamerican tattoos. While the Oban 11 Year Old, which is finished in Caribbean pot still rum casks, features a vibrant illustration of a Soca dancer in full regalia.
Read on to view the full list of bottlings. The expressions will be available in select U.S.
