Japan may have reached the pinnacle of chic as a honeymoon destination when newlyweds Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio landed their private plane in Tokyo on February 1, 1954. In a tangle of bouncing blonde curls and clamoring spectators, the actress and baseball player managed to hop in a convertible and speed off to the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo's Chiyoda ward. Thus, the city's status with honeymooners was officially cemented: undeniably fabulous. (Nevermind that the Monroe-DiMaggio marriage only lasted a year.)
Now, after decades of Japan travel frenzy in which Americans have flocked to the country—for fiery orange Shinto shrines in Kyoto, gargantuan tuna in the early-morning Toyosu market, steamy onsens shrouded in ritual, and neon-lit alleys through the capital city—the wider trend of Japan travel shows no signs of stopping; the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reports that since borders reopened in October 2022, post coronavirus closures, visitor numbers have nearly reached pre-pandemic levels with more than 2.3 million overseas arrivals in July alone. That's impressively close to the 2.9 million who visited in the same month of 2019, which was a record-breaking year for Japan tourism. Those numbers also represent a slightly less-tangible, but undeniably hearty, segment of honeymooners—for whom the destination is more popular than ever.
“While there will always be couples who prefer to spend their full honeymoon lounging on the beach or by the pool, we're seeing that more and more pairs want to experience local culture, try new activities, and be active for at least part of their trip.”
Just take a look at your Instagram or TikTok feed—or mine, anyway—and the proof is in the posts. It's my colleague, that friend of a friend, the neighbors, my sister, someone from college, someone else—all of them sharing photos and requests for tips on honeymooning in Japan. Andres Zuleta, a travel planner at Boutique Japan, can corroborate this feeling.
“We've been promoting Japan honeymoons for six or seven years, but it was more of a niche thing [then],” says Zuleta. What was once an audience of ‘foodie’ travelers, usually from cities like New York and Los Angeles looking to have a more adventurous and culinary-driven honeymoon, has evolved to a clientele of all kinds of travelers, he says. Sure, there are the sushi and soba-noodle chasers, but there are also wellness lovers, hikers, art fiends, and everything in between. “Now, a wider swath of people has become interested in Japan, and the volume has definitely increased," says Zuleta.

Belgrade’s foundations stand above a network of prehistoric caves — some of the scattered shells found within them date back up to eight million years. These cavernous spaces have housed a Roman aqueduct system and military tunnels; more recently, they served as Second World War bunkers for Nazi occupiers. Enter the network from Tasmajdan Park and explore a section used by German soldiers escaping Belgrade’s liberation in 1944.
