Japan is widely considered to be a polite, rule-following country, but knowing its reputation didn't fully prepare me for my recent trip.

Surprises can be great. But outside of an unexpected first-class upgrade, most of us prefer to know what to expect when it comes to travel.
That's especially true when it comes to airport security wait times — particularly on the heels of a summer that saw the 10 busiest days ever recorded at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints.
Some of my most stressful airport experiences have involved arriving late to the airport for one reason or another and then standing in a security line watching precious minutes tick away.
Sure, this is where line-skipping programs like Clear and TSA PreCheck can be a lifesaver. They offer critical time savings, even as membership in the PreCheck program has exploded to record numbers.
But the TSA also offers another way to plan ahead and predict your security wait time — right on your smartphone.

The TSA has a free mobile app you can download: the MyTSA app.
It displays current security wait times at checkpoints across the country. Plus, it predicts future wait times in the terminal you'll be visiting — down to the day and hour.
When you log in, you'll see a screen like the one below. It displays the airport you're closest to and what the current wait times are. At the time of writing, I was near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD), where wait times were between 15 and 30 minutes.
You can also add airports — such as the one closest to your home — to a list as a "favorite." In my case, that's Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina. Wait times, as I search, are less than 15 minutes.
Plus, you can search any airport across the country.
I searched for New York City's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and found wait times listed at an estimated 15 to 30 minutes.
You can also whittle the information down to specific terminals, like Terminal C, where Delta Air Lines operates its LaGuardia hub.
This app also shows whether a Federal Aviation Administration delay program is happening; this may not greatly affect security wait times, but it likely means flight delays are widespread.
The app can also help you plan for estimated future wait times based on past data.
Let's say you're planning to fly out of LaGuardia in the morning on a Friday, often the busiest day of the week. You could use the app to see what LaGuardia's TSA checkpoints are typically like between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on a Friday.
It shows that waits are often 15 to 30 minutes during that time, with a longer wait time later in the afternoon.
Keep in mind that if you have TSA PreCheck, your wait is almost certainly going to be shorter. As the app points out, most TSA PreCheck passengers (nationwide) wait five

Home-swapping has thrived in New York City since Local Law 18 went into effect one year ago and placed tight restrictions on short-term rentals.
Passengers heading to Paris will soon lose a popular daytime service that departs from the U.S. in the morning and arrives by evening.
From the moment my husband and I got engaged in 2021, we knew we wanted to honeymoon in Italy. After all, our shared Italian heritage really bonded us during our early days of dating.
One might reasonably assume that the world’s best-connected airports would have been around for a while—long enough to test out new airline routes, apply those learnings, and figure out the smoothest way to introduce new carriers and destinations. Heathrow, for example, has long been hailed as one of the world’s best hubs, having opened nearly 80 years ago.
US rapper Fatman Scoop, who topped charts in Europe with Be Faithful two decades ago and later contributed to hits by other artists, has died.
JetBlue thinks there might be some skiers who are willing to splurge on its top-notch Mint business-class experience.
Spirit Airlines is waving off summer with a bang and a big sale that has flights across the country starting as low as $48 one-way.
A few years ago, when flight prices were awfully expensive, I saw an Amtrak ticket from California to Washington, DC, for just $250 and snapped it up.
In October of 2021, I booked a round-trip ride between New York City and Miami on Amtrak's overnight sleeper train. In total, I spent 60 hours on the rails.
Can cool and conglomerate coexist — let alone thrive — when it comes to edgy lifestyle brands and multibillion-dollar hotel parent companies?
Nine hours before my flight from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac) was due to depart, I got an email from the airline that my flight was delayed. I was annoyed since the weather was clear both in Seattle and at my destination but didn’t really think too much about it—until I checked the news and saw that the airport was under a cyberattack.
